JonBandit replied: "sounds more like your situation/symptoms than the meds. are keeping you awake."

michaelbellman replied: "You probably have killed the infection, but the goo and dead tissues are still in your nose and sinuses. Try a saline nasal RINSE (not a spray) A full warm water saline rinse goes in one nostril and out the other. It draws out all the gunk and shrinks the tissue (like swimming in the ocean). I've been doing it at work too. The buffered salt doesn't 'sting' as much as plain salt water. You can use a new method like Nasopure, or the vintage, Netipot. The special bottle and salt is about $20. You can do this a often as you like with no bad side effects. You don’t need a prescription for this therapy. So if you live in a state like mine, they’ve pretty much “outlawed” sudafed medicine. Drug-free is really the way to go on a frequent-use basis. (I put in a link for “what” and “how” – there’s also some good info on wiki)"

Should I take the Zithromax or let the "sinus infection" run its course? I am 11 weeks pregnant & for about 2 weeks now I have been suffering from what I thought was a head cold. When I called my doctor & described my symptoms, they said it sounded like a sinus infection though (b/c the nasal discharge is... um, colorful... and I have a slight headache that comes & goes along with fatigue, congestion and nasal drip into the throat). So they called me in a prescription of Zithromax. My only concern is that they diagnosed me over the phone instead of doing an exam. But my OB agrees that Zithromax is fine during pregnancy & that since it does sound like a sinus infection to take it. I'm concerned after reading various case studies regarding the drug & miscarriages plus the company's warning to take only if necessary & if diagnosis is confident. Is this a safe drug to take while pregnant? How long can you have a sinus infection for anyway before it progresses to something worse? Don't these go away on their own?

josiefene3 replied: "Call your doctor."

hockeygirl7395 replied: "If the doc prescribed it...it's probably ok. However, an infection/cold can put stress on your body. This makes your body protect itself first and then the baby...so it would be better to take the med and kick the infection sooner rather than stressing out your body and the baby."

M Kerr RN L&D replied: "Def. safe to take! And you will feel sooo much better!!! "

SHAUN S replied: "I took zithromax when i was pregnant, and everything was fine, the dr. said its better to take it than to get an infection or run a fever. I would definatelly take it before you get worse."

Stephanie C replied: "Um, a sinus infection won't run its course! I get plenty of them. If you don't want to use the Zpack, try raw garlic. Chop it(a clove off the bulb) up into pill size and swallow like a pill. Do several times a day. I do raw garlic daily, as I am prone to UTIs (already had one) during pregnancy and I get sinus infections during the spring and fall. Garlic is a natural antibiotic. I am also suprise you would be prescribed the Zpack before Amoxicillin. Amox is safer, AFAIK."

Debbie V replied: "PLEASE!!! Does it take an act of congress to get you to take your meds? TWO doctors, ONE a specialist, agreed that Zmax is okay. So take it now. It won't hurt your baby. I know you're trying to protect your child, but that's what you hired the doctors to do. Trust them. This is their life's work. TX Mom"

Z-pack( zithromax) antibiotics for sinus infection? My doctot just called in a RX for me for the z-pack. I'm just wondering how effective it has been for others that have taken it. It's only a 5 day supply so I'm guessing it's pretty strong stuff? I haven't had a sinus infection for years..I'm miserable. Will this stuff make me feel better quickly?

TeriR replied: "I've taken the Z-Pack a couple of times now. You take it for five days, but it actually works for about 10. It's been very effective for me, and it's great taking it just once a day. It took me a couple of days to start feeling better. It usually takes about 48 hours for an antibiotic to kick in. Feel better soon!"

bigdogg76 replied: "zithromax is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat many upper respiratory tract infections. even though the antibiotic is a 5 day supply, the drug remains in your system and continues to work for 10 days."

Lee B replied: "hi, It is a strong antibiotic. I have had it for a sinus infection and it worked great. Leighlee"

diannegoodwin@sbcglobal.net replied: "The great thing about the Z-pack is it only needs to be taken for 5 days, but it keeps working for 10 days. It works great. I get a sinus infection every year, and my doctor always prescribes it for me. You'll feel better in a day or less."

startrektosnewenterpriselovethem replied: "Yes it works fairly quickly and it is a powerful antibiotic. Something to alieviate your symptoms is to inhale steam."

lkmom replied: "Excellent antibiotic!! You should be feeling much better by tomorrow! They used zithromax for my daughter's sinus infection a couple of months ago. Also, she had strep throat 4 times in 3 months last year. Zithromax is what finally got rid of it. She was strep free until her tonsilectomy 4 months later."

Fireant replied: "Z-pack is only taken for 5 days, but works in the system for around 10 days. Depending on the sinus infection, you should start feeling better in a couple of days. The patients that I've known to use a Z-pack for sinus infection have been very happy with the results. Remember, drink plenty of fluids too. This will help the antibiotic flush the stuff from your system."

I'm on the antibiotic Azithromycin (Zithromax) for a Sinus Infection. How much can I safely drink? Its my third day taking the 5 day dosage (with 2 pills the first day). They're the little pink pills. I'm a 19 yr old male in college, and I've drank on antibiotics before, but it was a different antibiotic and i had an adverse reaction (i.e. more puking than normal for a hangover)... I'm wondering if Zithromax will produce the same reaction (puking, diarrhea) if I only drink moderately over this weekend. Thanks for help!

Streck replied: "The antibiotic was not the cause of your increase puking in the past and will not play a part in your drinking this time. The alcohol and the meds will not interact abnormally but they may cause increased stomach irritation. You are safe to drink as much as you want."

Livingstrong replied: "You could probably drink 1 or 2 glasses without getting diarrhea nor vomiting, but that is not the point. If you are taking antibiotics then what is the purpose of trying to get medical help if you are going to drink alcohol? Medicine metabolizes is the liver and alcohol too, so even if you have 1 or 2 glasses of alcohol and you don't get diarrhea nor vomiting, you might damage your liver even if you don't feel it right now, the consequences are going to last a lifetime. Think about it and don't drink anythig."

AL R replied: "Anyone who drinks while taking antibiotics is either desperate or stupid."

Missy replied: "dont drink-ur not suppose to drink when on antibiotics"

the_only_solorose replied: "alcohol destroys the effectiveness of the antibiotic for one thing....why bother with the drug if you intend to drink? For another, zithromax will most definitely make you ill if you take alcohol, both while you are taking it and for five days after, so I recommend you go on the wagon until next weekend."

renee k replied: "drink what ever you want cuz thats not the problem the real issue is that antibiotics get cancelled out and dont work when you drink"

Augmentin vs. Zithromax for Sinus Infections? Zithromax didn't work. Prednisone didn't work. Will Augmentin? Doctor said he will try Augmentin if I'm not feeling better, which I'm not.

Nicky71 replied: "My kids used Augmentin and it worked fine. But, you should ask a doctor about this, do NOT medicate yourself. Both are medicines of very delicate use!"

mlgable replied: "If the Zithromax didn't work hopefully the augmentin will work. I am not sure why the doc tried prednisone and this is not an anitbiotic and would not cure a sinus infection. If you don't get relieif in a day or two with the Augmentin ask for a set of sinus x-rays if they haven't done any yet to be sure this is what you have."

nana4141 replied: "http://www.niaid.nih.gov/factsheets/sinusitis.htm"

late appointment replied: "what prednisone has to do with sinus infection? it sounds odd. Augmentin is the first line drug for such infection. make sure you know that prednisone use was justified then consult your doctor. if it wasn't justified, there is nothing to worry about, go for Augmentin with the suitable dose for your age and body weight"

drdave1666 replied: "not all sinus infections are bacterial...some are viral (in which NO antibiotic will work). zithromax is a macrolide and usually indicated for the 'atypical' bugs... augmentin in a penicillin derivative and indicated for the 'typical' bugs... prednisone is a steroid given to help with inflammation and will do nothing for the infection (only swelling)...a true sinus infection is usually obvious...reddened areas over the forehead, thick and dark nasal drainage (mucus ---snot for you kids) and fever... just in case your infection is viral (that is why azithromycin) did not work, do steam showers int he am, mid-day and before bedtime...avoid mild and cheese, a humidifier or vaporizer at night, drink plenty of fluids and do not take benadryl unless you have a drippy nose...take a decongestant to help open you up...warm compresses over the sinuses as well good luck"

Karen B replied: "Your doctor might prescribe Prednisone, a corticosteroid drug, to reduce the inflammation in the mucous membranes, not for infection. Both Zithromax and Augmentin are broad spectrum antibiotics and both are used for sinus infections. Antibiotic effectiveness depends on sensitiveness of bacteria. If bacteria is susceptible to Augmentin, it will be an effective treatment."

i have a sinus infection just went to dr i feel awful someone help? i feel awful anyone ever have a sinus infection how told does it take to feel better, dr gave me zithromax and flonase........

cool_cancerian replied: "Sinus infection is a bacterial infection. Allow at least 4 days to start feeling better. Breathing humidified air might help you feel better, can you get your hands on a blue cone-shaped face mask like surgeons use? Also, can try breathing heated water with Vick's vapor rub and see if the vapor gives you some relief. If you have to go out, cover your face and ears to keep cold air out. Don't smoke. Take vitamin C. Eat some chocolate cake to bring your spirits up and drink plenty of water. Good luck."

Sinus infection and antibiotics? My son started preschool in December and has brought home 3 colds since then. I've had 2 of them and got a nasty sinus infection after the second one. I went to the doctor on Friday and was prescribed Zithromax for the infection. It's been 2 days and I really don't feel any better. How long does it normally take this antibiotic to clear an infection? Should I call my doctor again on Monday or wait and finish the antibiotics?

btbasm replied: "You should see some relief within 3 days."
