Does Zyrtec or Claritin work better as an allergy medicine? I've been taking Claritin as needed for my springtime allergies. It works ok but they are really bad this year. Some people have recommended taking Zyrtec. Does it work better?

gomagic! replied: "for me it does. also try zyrtec d."

vaesar replied: "The web said no side effects.Click here site:has all things"

sMITTstar replied: "I always found Claratyne a better alternative as it worked better and because Zertec made me break out in a rash, apparently I'm allergic to the fillers. It really depends on what works best for you, everyone is different. You could ask your chemist which one they recommend for you though. Hope this helps :) xx"

MidnightSun95 replied: "My sister takes Zyrtec for her allergies and it works really well for her. It usually depends on the person; different things work for different people."

Lisa M replied: "At one time I took Claritin when it was a prescription. I had taken it for years and it stopped working all together. I have always had eye allergies. I have numerous allergies, environmental, food, etc.... and after I tried Zyrtec it was fantastic. I love it and it helps my eyes tremendously. My kids also take it and I get the generic version and feel it works the same. I was so worried when it went over the counter cause I had tried the Claritin and it did not help. Either my allergies changed or the meds itself was different. Now I will also say that NO pill can keep me from a flare up and especially cat dander, dust, dust mites, etc.... but this is the best and have even tried to go back to prescription allegra and a couple other new ones and they still don't do what Zyrtec can do. And I am allergic/sensitive to lots of medicines out there also and that is why I cant take the D form of most meds cause it is way to strong and I end up vomiting. Hopefully you are not like myself and can take most meds without problems. Good Luck and Hope Zyrtec works for you as it does work for me and my kids."

Is generic Cetirizine HCL as effective as Zyrtec? Does it have different side effects? I've been taking Zyrtec year-round for years but am losing my insurance coverage. I can get 350 of the generic for about $17 but the best I can do on Zyrtec is 75 for $31!

daddyrx replied: "Cetirizine is just as effective as Zyrtec. The side effect profile is the same. Generic drugs undergo the same scrutiny as brand name drugs when they come onto the market."

If Zyrtec helps me with my symptoms, does it definitely mean that I have an allergy and not a cold ? I have symptoms that could be related to either an allergy or a cold. I've never had allergies before ( I'm 31 ). I'm planning on taking Zyrtec tonight, for the first time. If Zyrtec makes me feel better, can I conclude that I have an allergy, and not a cold ? Thanks :).

Starkissed replied: "Yea it's an allergy. Zyrtec doesn't work like an antibiotic."

A dog lover replied: "No. Zyrtec blocks histamines, and histamine blocking can still relive cold symptoms. I won't explain all the nitty gritty details, but you cannot assume you don't have a cold because you're taking Zyrtec. As for the person above me who thinks antibiotics treat colds, you are wrong. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections. The common cold is caused by a virus. Antibiotics have absolutely no effect on viral infections."

rhonda replied: "when we reach this age, (unfortunately) our bodies change and we develop new allergies. if you have a common cold, it will last a few days to a week. The flu normally lasts at least 2 weeks, with the usual aches and pains. allergies come and go. sneezing, itchy watery eyes, dry hacking cough. but you dont get the cold sweats, or the shakes. there are several great allergy medicines out there that work. start with the cheapest. but to answer your question, yes. if zyrtec works for you, then it is allergies. you should know something with in 2 hours or less."

How long does it take for Zyrtec or Claritin to work? I've been taking claritin for about a year now and it takes about 4 hours until most of my symptoms are gone. The Zyrtec commercial said their product works 2 HOURS FASTER! How long until zyrtec or claritin supposed to work?

RedheadMOMI replied: "zyertec 2 hours claritin 4 hours claritin lasts 14 hours zyertic lasts 18 hours"

How long does it take Children's Zyrtec to start working? My son is 15 months and the doctor gave us children's Zyrtec to give him and hes has been taking it for about 5 days now and it still hasn't helped any. I was wondering if anyone knew why or when it should start working! Thanks so much!!!

kassag123 replied: "Wow I didn't even know they gave Zyrtec to children that young????? My takes it and he is 10yrs It kicked in after about 2days. I have to give it at bed time because of the drowiness. Then I found after a month on it I started every other evening. He was just too grogy in the am. The benefits aren't worth it. There are some great other tricks I found NO- dryer sheets or fabric softner NONE Clear soaps Vitamin C- small dose in the am and pm Windows in room closed. He has an AC. No pollin or grass comes in his room I don' dust or sweep his room I clean with a wet towel which picks up the dust. This sounds stupid---- keep hands clean and remind him to keep them away from his face. Good Luck"

Does Zyrtec work in the same way as Claritin? I read that Zyrtec is going to become available over the counter. I have been using Claritin since April 2007 for allergies (I just started suffering from allergies) and I was wondering if it was OK to switch to Zyrtec. Do they work in the same way? Are they for the same kind of allergies? Thanks for your answers.

JLVWG replied: "They are almost identical. Very similar..."

SU replied: "Yes, they are very similar. The only difference is that Zyrtec may have a tendency to make you sleepy (the doctor actually recommends that it be taken at night time because of that side effect) -- Claritin doesn't have that side effect. Other than that, they treat the same allergies in basically the same way."

curlyblackdragon replied: "They just have different active ingredients. The pharmacist told me that occasionally one type of active ingredient won't work for someone, so they can try the other brand, other than that there's no reason why Zyrtec won't work for you. Good luck with it."

Elizabeth Enjoli replied: "basically they are th same thing with different name brands... they are also basically the same thing as benedryl but dont work as well b/c the active ingredient that makes benedryl so darn good is the same thing that causes the drowsiness.... and zyrtec and claritin take that ingredient out..... i know this b/c i am in nursing school and you have to take pharmacology 1 & 2"

trish replied: "Yes they work very much in the same way. My doctor had me try both of them and said either one would be okay for me. For the Zyrtec worked better. For a friend of mine the Claritin works better. So, because they are so similar, it may just depend upon your own allergies and your body chemistry, etc. There is a generic store brand of the active ingredient of Claritin too. That can save some money. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about your particular allergies and what they might recommend."

JAJ replied: "I have actually taken both. Zyrtec did not work for me and also made me feel groggy. My general practise doctor prescribed this for me before I saw my allergy doctor. My allergy doctor actually told me that my allergies were too severe for Zyrtec and told me to take Clairtin. So I guess it may depend on how bad your allergies are."

Does anyone know where I can find the yellow top the girl is wearing in the zyrtec commercial? How about the brand or where I can find one similar? It's yellow and white and goes around the neck. I've been driving myself crazy tryin to find it, or even a picture of it! Anthroplohie is the closest I've gotten, but I want the real deal!

Katelyn Y replied: "do you have a picture? i looked all over the internet for a pic to help you but i cant find one... okay i dunno if these are close but im guessing that they will be the closest you will find haha. let me know if any of them are close to what you are looking for: =-3095188374838338264&id=810102&parentid=APP_TOPS_SOLID&pushId=APP_TOPS_SOLID&popId=APPAREL&sortProperties=&navCount=10&navAction=jump&fromCategoryPage=true&selectedProductSize=&selectedProductSize1=&color=gol maybe style for this one, not color though:=-3095188374838338264&id=813014&parentid=APP_TOPS_SOLID&pushId=APP_TOPS_SOLID&popId=APPAREL&sortProperties=&navCount=12&navAction=jump&fromCategoryPage=true&selectedProductSize=&selectedProductSize1=&color=bro or just check out all the tops at because a lot of their shirts are that style and a few might be close to what you are looking for."

Moos replied: "Are you talking about the yellow shirt that circles the neck but is sleeveless? If so, I am looking for it also. Please let me know if you find anything and I will do the same. Thanks!"

oldgoat389 replied: "Me too! I absolutely love that blouse and need to have one. I tried calling Zyrtec and they told me its in the "wardrobe dept" they are not allowed to give out any information. It is so pretty...."

Client #1 replied: "I have looked very hard for this as well. I think I found the top but it is only available now in pink, not yellow. It is by the designer Tibi and is called the St. Tropez embroidered top."

Does anyone know what type of dog they use on the new Zyrtec commercial? The commercial shows a white furry dog in a convertible with the wind blowing in his furry face. My fiancee loves furry dogs but couldn't figure out what kind this was. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

shadow_rhelm79 replied: "That is a rough coat 2 color Parson Russel Terrier also called a Jack Russel Terrier. He is awfully cute isn't he?"

Has anyone used ZYRTEC does it make you drowsy? I've used clariton for years and I don't REALLY think it does any good. Allegra makes me drowsy. I always get a sever sinus inf. (sometimes twice) when I'm in Fla.

CircusFreakGRITZ replied: "theres really no way to tell unless u take it,,,everyones different."

al replied: "Yes and yes it made me drowsy."

Damocles replied: "I've been on it for like 2-4 years now, and it hasn't made me drowsy."

jimstock60 replied: "zyrtec d does, the over the counter stuff doesn't seem to make me drowsy but my doctor warned that it may. So she told me to take it once a day before I go to sleep."

bradxschuman replied: "I use it & love it. No drowsyness."

Neil B replied: "I, too, have used Clariton for years, and it works, but I recently switched to Zyrtec because it is cheaper. I have found no differences, and it doesn't make me drowsy."

Big Dave replied: "I used zyrtec and found it did not help me at all and did not make me drowsy either. Clarityn or any other branded Loratadine based treatment works well for me with no drowsiness"

Jonny replied: "Well i don't know if it has different effects on teens, but i took it a few years ago because i was getting hives and my doctor prescribed it and it didn't make me drowsy at all and it worked great, i don't know if it is different now that it is an over the counter medication and not a prescribed medicine, but i would say try it!"

Stacy replied: "ummm i dont really remember but i remember i had a phase where i used to take it cuz i needed it.. it works and thats what matters for me.. im not sure if it made me sleepy.. cuz like i take the pill then i go ok im prolly guna get sleepy now, then i do.. but i dont know if thats because of the pill or cuz im tired or cuz im expecting it? u know what i mean? but just use it consistently and ask ur doc how long u should use it for.. dont be lazy and skip taking a pill.. lol it works for me get well soon OH oops i just remembered.. lol my brains kinda weird today excuse me.. anyways it doesnt make u drowsy i remember having a convo with the doctor about this. lol, she was like it doesnt make u drowsy and it works fast"

katy replied: "Yes, for me it made me very, very drowsy. It is listed as one of the most common side effects according to my doctor. I take Allegra and have no problem with it."

M J replied: "yes i had to take it at night"

PharmD replied: "Yes, it makes me drowsy. As a pharmacist, I can tell you that the active chemical in zyrtec is structurally related to a powerful sedative known as hydroxyzine. The change in the active ingredient in zyrtec is significant enough to reduce alot of the drowsy side effects, but this is probably the reason that drowsiness occurs in some people. Also, drowiness occured more often in people taking zyrtec versus placebo in clinical studies. My advice: try it and see what happens; not everyone experiences drowsiness."

Does anyone have kids who take Singular and Zyrtec or just one of them? If so, does your child feel sick a lot and tired? My 11 year old son is on both and gets sick to his stomach really easy. He's getting a physical today and we'll ask the dr. but I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced this with their kids. Thanks! I just put this in pregnancy and parenting thinking more parents might answer.

David H replied: "Two of my children are on Singular. My son has been on Zyrtec, but not at the same time. We took our son off of Zyrtec, it effected his mood (made him more aggressive)."

Joey Jr born 6/19/09! replied: "I don't have a kid who takes these, but I was on them. I never took both at the same time. I have allergies and they let me try Zyrtec and I didn't like it so they switched me to Singular. While Singular is technically an asthma medication, it does wonders for allergies as well. I'm not sure why they would have him on both. I'm not a Dr. by any means, but if they wouldn't put me on both, why would they put a small child on them? You may want to check it out."

Marianne M replied: "I'm still pregnant, but I take Singulair. It tends to not make me drowsy, but I can be moody / irritable. I decided to take an herbal remedy for asthma prior to getting pregnant. I felt a lot better. I wasn't as moody & I had more energy (my 2nd grade students even commented on the moody part .. lol). I took up taking Singulair again when we were TTC. I'm a 32 year old adult on 10mg, I can only imagine what it can do to a kid. Good luck!"
