Wendy Woo replied: "I have PCOS too but not heard anyone really have the side effects your describing with being on Metformin! It sucks your feeling that ill! Can you not phone NHS 24? Just an idea!! My doctors won't let me speak to them until I make an appointment with them either! Good luck hope you feel better soon!!"
anna replied: "i m so sorry u r having problems with metformin,i have had pcos all my life, tried to conceive on my own for 10 years last year finaly went to a fertility specialist,he put me on metformin 1500 mg 3 times a day.i had trouble adjusting to it only for first two weeks, then i started to see the miracles of it.helped me loose weight, which is a big achievement if u want to conceive with pcos, for the first time in life i had regular periods without bc.i started taking it in june & in sep i fell pregnant for the first time in my life all thanks to metformin.its a real miracle drug.try to take it for a little while more if possible, becz trust me hon end result will be worth all the trouble.metformin is 10000 times better & safer then clomid.all the best & tons of baby dust coming ur way."
On Metformin and 4 days late? I was told by my doctor that I have PCOS (and hypothyroidism but that is being treated with synthroid) and I am taking 500mg of Metformin twice daily. I started taking metformin about a year ago. And for the last 6 months or so I have had regular cycles of about 33-35 days.
My husband and I aren't exactly "trying" to get pregnant, but we aren't really trying to prevent it, either. I have been charting my bbts for the last few cycles, too. And for the most part it looks like I have been ovulating. This past month, I had a temp dip right before a slow rise to above the coverline (which i assumed could be ovulation because it was about the time i usually ovulate anyway). It then stayed high for about a week before dipping to below the coverline, and then it rose to even higher than the highest temp a day later.
Is it possible that this dip could have been an "implantation dip" that I've heard about?? I'm about 4 days late, and considering the last 6 months have been constant, is it possible that after a while the metformin stops working as well as it used to? We did just move to a new apartment, but it wasn't stressful really so I would think that stress isn't the reason...I've been having a lot of slight menstrual like cramping, heavy boobs, headaches, and a lower bachache that won't go away...does this happen if your cycle is just "off" or could it be possible that I'm pregnant??
Has this happened to anyone before? Particularly if they are on metformin??
Kiss up replied: "I was put on Metformin for PCOS and I was pregnant 3 months later. I had a dip at 7dpo. and I am now 8 weeks pregnant. The best thing to do is take a test. I tried to have a baby for almost 3 Years! Good luck I hope it happened for you!"
Serious Side Effects of Metformin for PCOS use? My doctor put me on Metformin 500 mg 3 x daily. I actually have a normal blood sugar at 78. I've felt dizzy, had a headache, have passed out (almost fell asleep at the wheel last night).
I am not sure whether to stop this or go to an ER if this continues. She tried the pill to control the PCOS but it did not work. I also have a pituitary tumor.
I feel awful! Will this go away?
just me replied: "Get your doctor to refer you to an endocrinology practice. Endocrinologists specialize in the treatment of pituitary issues and can help you get the metformin right for your system. I had to do this when I went on metformin, and the Endocrinologist got me on the right dose for my body."
mlbaker123 replied: "Metformin is also used in Diabetics so it may be causing your Glucose level to bottom out. You need to talk to your doctor right away. He may need to decrease your dose."
metformin.....................................? i am a little concerned i started metformin for 2 days then stopped i am getting pretty bad headaches and was wondering if thats normal or somthing to really worry about
i also get weak spells
Jessica G replied: "I also take metformin and I got really nauseated when I first started taking it but then after about 5 days it got better. You should ask your doctor. But my guess is that your body is adjusting to it."
Margarette replied: "Totally normal. Metformin is tricky. It's best to just take it regularly to get over the bad spell. When I started taking I felt completely ill (nausea, headache, light sensitivity, and tired) 2-3 days after the first day. I was apart of a PCOS group and it was par for the course it happens to everyone to different degrees. By the 5th and 6th day the side-effects were gone, and I haven't had them since."
did anyone have a bad reaction to metformin and had to stop taking it? i was on metformin 500 for about 8 months. i stopped taking it a month ago. i found out i was diabetic 8 months ago and this is the only med ive been on. i kept telling my doctor about the side effects. i went to different doctors for second opinions. everyone just wouldnt listen to me. so i stopped the meds on my own to see if thats what was causing all my problems. it got to the point that i would work and sleep. nothing else. but everyone kept saying it was uncontrolled diabetes and i would get better. 8 months! come on! i would get hot and cold chills when i slept. headaches, muscle aches, stomach aches. my stomach never felt right. i would feel sick after a ate sometimes. the list goes on and on. i know i need to be on meds for the diabetes. since ive stopped, my blood sugar readings are a bit high. but every single side effect is gone since i stopped the meds! i can actually function again.
has this happened to anyone else?
alt.healer replied: "as medicines go Metformin is one of the safest that I know of and I have been reading package inserts for many years. I have been taking 1500 mg a day for seven years and have no known reactions since day one, nothing like what you describe. Read the package insert to see if these reactions are mentioned."
Mr. Peachy® replied: "The only side effects consistent with the Metformin are your stomach problems. I quit because it was no longer necessary after getting on a serious health kick."
no period for 63 days, have pcos, but i dont have all the symptoms of pregnancy? i have had this happen b4 but i had the symptoms of a pregnancy then but not now.i want kids. my hubby and i haven't had sex for 63 days so whats happening to me. i was taking metformin and stopped. i tried clomid for 2 month without success. i stopped taken it in july. ihaven't had a period since august i have been gasy, very sleepy, nausa, crampy here and there, no sex though,i have had headaches every other day last week. i am not stressing. i have lower back pain today thats new.
Dana ? replied: "What are you waiting for to take a test?Do you think you're pregnant?Maybe it would be wise to see a Gynocologist!"
Nonniesangels replied: "if i were you, i would have taken a hpt or at least called my doc. what are you waiting for?! God bless yoou and good luck"
Shannon L replied: "Take a test and have sex with your husband. 63 days is a ridiculously long time to go without. He'll appreciate it as well.
Also, how long were you taking Metformin? I've read some studies that longer periods, like 3 months on Metformin, have increased the chances of conception. You should ask your doctor what they think about that or if they've read similar studies.
Best of luck!"
sweetheart24 replied: "Hey there! I think that maybe you should take a pregnancy test just to rule out pregnancy. All of your symptoms probably have a lot to do with your imbalanced hormones do to PCOS. Your period could be getting ready to show up. You could always also call your dr. office. I seem to call my RE's office everytime something is going on weird with me. lol! Your doctor will probably give you a pill like provera or prometrium (both progesterone) to start your period. I have PCOS too and it's a pain. I'm on my first round of Clomid after a failed round of Femara. I just wanna wish you all the best of luck :)"
momto1... replied: "Are you saying that you haven't had a period for 63 days and you haven't taken an hpt? Go to the store asap and take a test so you can start prenatal care if you are or see a doc if your not! Good luck!"
Ladies, please HELP! PCOS Pregnant? First of all: I have PCOS. I don't ovulate regularly.
I started on Metformin in Feb 07
and Yasmin BC in June 07
until Nov 07.
I still don't know if I ovulate but:
I missed my period (which could be because I stopped BC)
Nausea
Headaches
Cramps
Sharp pains in lower stomach
Discharge
I know...I know. I'm on my way to the doctor right now, but what do you think. I'll let you know if you were right.
pokemynoodle replied: "No. You just need a poo."
Tammy Tranton replied: "Well, you have many symptoms of pregnancy."
Tara662 replied: "It sounds like you're pregnant."
annacallsmekylito replied: "its possible it could just be you stopped BC
but most likely your pregnant..good luck"
Kristin M replied: "that definetly sounds like there is a possibility that you are pregnant let us know! good luck"
Trying to do the right thing replied: "Unfortunately, your symptoms are also PMS symptoms, so it's hard to say. Pregnancy wouldn't normally causes those symptoms for another few weeks, so I'd be careful about getting my hopes up. Plus, with a history of PCOS and just getting off birth control, it's highly likely that you are having an irregular cycle.
If you aren't pregnant, I highly recommend charting your cycles to find out if you are ovulating. I have PCOS and irregular cycles myself, so I wanted to know if I was even ovulating before my husband and I TTC. I read the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility which was highly recommended to me by many, many people. It was a life changer! I now know all about my cycle and my body which will make it a lot easier to get pregnant. I started charting my basal body temps every morning, and noting my cervical fluid etc. It takes less than five minutes and by seeing temperature shifts that correspond with my fluid, I can tell that yes I do ovulate and I know when. It is so much easier than wondering!
I can also use temps to see if I'm pregnant or not because a women's luteal phase (the time between ovulation and period) remains pretty constant and mine is exactly 14 days. Since my chart will show when I ovulated, I can be pretty sure after the 15th day with higher temps and no period that I would be pregnant.
I highly, highly recommend reading that book or at least checking out the matching website and message boards at ovusoft.com
All women should know this much about their cycles!"
What the heck is wrong with me? (Insulin resistant question)? I'm insulin resistant, to put it simply. Okay so, I feel like crap.
My mom won't take me to the doctor because she doesn't think anything is wrong. I take metformin. I had a big piece of cake today, and I haven't had something with that much sugar in a long time. I have an intense stomach ache; I feel like I'm going to puke. I have a really, really bad headache, and I feel like I'm going to pass out. Whenever I have ice cream, I have diarrhea for two days. I had that one test (I'm not sure of the name) where you drink this thing and they take your blood every hour for three hours. They said I'm hyperglycemic, too. I'm not really sure what that is. Why do I feel so sick all the time? When I don't eat for long periods of time, I tend to be a little out of it, not being able to understand people very well. Today, after I had the piece of cake, something happened that I've never experience very well. Usually I shake a little bit after having a lot of sugar, but this time, it wouldn't stop. I couldn't stop moving...it was so scary. The headaches are intense...I've been coming home after school and sleeping. It's 9 pm my time and I get home at 2 pm, and I just woke up from coming home and sleeping, in such a deep sleep, and I'm still tired. What the heck?!
If I have insulin resistance does that mean I'm diabetic?
Tsunami replied: "first of all you should be eating 6 small meals instead of 3. you should be spacing things out. YOu need to not eat that much sweets. yes you had a test for sugar. there are so many ways to do this ad they said you were that well that means that you are low sugar. its just as bad as high sugar. you are insulin resistant/ that is bad but they have other things they can do for you. i would suggest you go to Specialist for diabetics and have yourself checks and watched for quite awhile and find out what you need there are man more types of meds you can take and help Control what you are feeling. the tiredness is the diabetics. you need to start taking the right meds and stuff you will feel much better. shaking is sometimes too much or too less sugar. if you are really messed up it will not register like that an more like my parents they don't' have it and if it goes too low they don't' even realize it and you can go dusty in the brain."
Shauna replied: "You need to see your health care provider to have your medication adjusted. You should also speak with a diabetes consultant to learn more about how to control your diet.
When they told you that you were "hyperglycemic," it meant that you have high blood sugar. Insulin is a hormone that helps sugar move into your cells and out of your blood. When your insulin is not working properly because you don't produce enough or there is resistance, the sugar does not move into your cells and circulates in your blood.
Your first step is to start checking your blood sugar on a regular basis during the day so you can see when you are high (blood sugar over 120) or low (blood sugar 80). This will help your doctor determine what medications are best for you. You also need to change your diet immediately. No more sugary foods that raise your blood sugar quickly. Instead, you should eat complex carbohydrates such as starches, wheats, potatoes, etc to keep your blood sugar at an even level.
The headaches, shakiness and low energy are all side effects of your sugar being out of the "normal zone." It is very important to start regulating this now so you don't experience serious complications later."
amythababii replied: "Ok Sweetie....
Insulin resistant means that your body has too much sugar in the blood and your losing insulin.
Insulin is what controls the sugar in the blood so that it can stay in balance.
But since the insulin is leaving out of your body... you have alot of sugar going thru your body right now.
USUALLY PEOPLE who are insulin resistant becaome diabetic because they lose all the insulin in they're body.
So when your body is full of sugar your blood pressure goes up.
And it gives you REALLY BIG HEADACHES AND IT MAKES YOUR HEART PUMP HARD and it makes you feel like shit.
This is very dangerous because you can have a heartattack with all the sugar in your system.
You need to stop eating sugar especially cake.
You dont want to be a diabetic and you dont want to end up in the hospital.
Drink alot of water and dont stop drinking metformin.
That's the only thing that will help your insulin levels to stay balanced."
modi vivendi hung heavily replied: "What's wrong with you? You said it yourself, you are insulin resistant - the test you took is called an oral glucose tolerance test, and you tested positive for insulin resistance. Hyperglycemic means your blood glucose was higher than normal when you took the test, indicating that you are most likely pre-diabetic or already diabetic. You should monitor your sugar intake carefully and avoid binging on sweets. Metformin helps keep your blood sugar in check, but you shouldn't depend on it to do all the work for you. What you listed are classical symptoms of acute hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis, which is potentially life threatening. Consider yourself lucky that you were still able to wake up and type this question. Drink plenty of water, cut back on sweets, and I highly recommend on buying a monitoring kit if you don't already have one so you can check your blood sugar level regularly and learn how to prevent this from happening again: "
TheOrange Evil replied: "Insulin resistance and diabetes aren't exactly the same. And, to correct what a previous poster said, insulin resistance isn't the state of having too much sugar in the blood. Insulin resistance means that the body doesn't properly absorb the insulin it makes. While insulin resistance often leads to diabetes (high blood sugar), there's usually an intermediate step: the pancreas begins producing quite a bit of insulin in an attempt to maintain normal blood sugar. Since you're already hyperglycemic, you're past this initial stage of high serum insulin levels and normal blood sugar.
I don't know what the results of your OGTT were, but if you are insulin resistant, hyperglycemic, and on Metformin, then my guess is that you are at the very least pre-diabetic, and possibly diabetic. You feel like crap because you're eating cake and, I assume, other foods very high in carbohydrates. You need to buy a glucose meter and monitor your blood sugar after every meal until you figure out what food negatively affects your blood sugar. With your blood sugar stabilized and normalized, you'll feel a lot more energetic. I'm kind of worried that your doctor sent you home with an abnormal OGTT and didn't tell you to buy a meter and change your diet plan."
Molly J replied: "You need to have someone explain what it means to be insulin resistant. You can not eat cake and stuff like that. It shoots your sugar up, which can make you feel like crap. You have to avoid food high in sugar. Do you test your sugar? I would be willing to bet after a bowl of ice cream your gluclose is 400 plus.... very dangerous."
