About Over The Counter Omeprazole in Answers
My mother is taking Diclofanac for sciatic nerve pain, and is on Omeprazole to counter its stomach effects; is? this healthy? Could it make her insides worse? I have noticed she burps quietly constantly, without realising, as if trying to bring something up

red replied: "Keep an eye on her or take her to another doctor.Diclofanac can cause all kinds of damage to intestines, stomach, liver, etc."

bty81216349 replied: "I am on the same 2 drugs for Arthritis and have been for years with no ill effects. Your Mum with probably know that Diclofenic causes stomach pain, indigestion and heartburn so that's why she is on Omeprazole and it could be she needs a higher dose. I was on the 20mg and last year it was upped to 40mg. If that doesn't work then talking to the doctor might be a good idea as there are other medicines similar to Omeprazole which might suit her better."

Cowpat replied: "There are other drugs available , normally in combinations that will be more effective for nerve pain. She needs to go back to the Doctor and tell him how unpleasant the side effects are for her personally and ask to change medications. No one has to stick with the first drug prescribed if it does not suit them or causes side effects. You need to go for something that suits you personally."

Muthu S replied: "Diclofenac sodium or potassium is a pain killer and causes stomach irritation and is gastric Omeprazole suppresses gastric acid to some extent You may go for pain killer injections like dolonex 1ml in consultation with the doctor"

Kernow Lady replied: "I am the same as bty and your Mum. the Omeprazole reduces the stomach acid. I burp a lot and did so before taking this medication, some people do. She is doing what the Doctor ordered and there are thousands of on the same medication."

trici replied: "Diclofenic can cause stomach ulcers which is probably what the Omeprazole is for. Please make sure your mum eats a proper meal with these tablets. Have you tried any complementary medicines. I did hear that "Dragons Claw" was effective for arthritis but whether it wold be so for Sciatica! Obviously she should check with the doctor first. Good luck and I hope all gets resolved. I know how it feels but mine only flares up when I am stressed, nowadays. (I tend to analyse and meditate)"

tmb2111 replied: "as a rule of thumb you should not take anything with anti-inflammatory qualities when you have certain types of stomach problems like ulcers dyspepsia and oesophegitis. i was incorrectly given diclofenic whilst taking omeprazole and started to bleed internally, however it is worth noting that medicines effect others in different ways so my advice would be to ask the doctor to have another look at the situation or seek a second opinion"

Why doesn't a different brand of omeprazole work as well as Prilosec OTC? I usually just buy the over the counter Prilosec OTC at the store but this time there was a similar product next to it with seemingly the same ingredients. The only difference I could see is that the Prilosec OTC is magnesium coated, but they both had 20mg of Omeprazole and are both time-released. The thing is the new medicine I bought doesn't nearly work as well as the Prilosec and I was just wondering if the coating could be the difference or if someone could explain what the difference might be?

Mr. Sunshine replied: "Because of the different delivery system and the coating."

Honestly, why in the USA must we have prescriptions for drugs that are over the counter in most countries? Honestly, why in the USA must we have prescriptions for drugs that are over the counter in almost every other country? I am not talking about drugs with any street value. There are plenty of over-the-counter drugs that kids get high on. I was married to a woman that would get stoned on over-the-counter ‘Primatine’. I know all about that crap. When drugs go to over-the-counter in the USA the price falls out. I remember when loratadine was prescription only. Yes, 30 pills were about $50 without insurance. Now $5 will buy 100 in the USA. That is about half what you pay in Mexico. Omeprazole recently switched to over the counter, and the price is falling. Soon it will cost less in the USA than in Mexico. Honestly I already know I need to take. I only see a doctor twice a year (that is about all my lame health insurance will pay for). He prescribes the same thing every time. After that I end up paying several hundred in prescriptions. The doctor will write a prescription for 3 months worth, because he wants more revenue from more visits. As a result I have been buying metoprolol (25mg), simvastian (5mg), and omeprazole (20mg) in Mexico for several years now. I know where I can buy a six month supply for about $50. Not only that but they have a free English speaking doctor for their customers (if you do not mind waiting). What more can I ask for? I never have any trouble with US customs. They ask me what the meds are for. I tell them, hypertension, cholesterol, and stomach. They send me on my way. Yes, I get some other shopping in while I am there. I always have a good time! BTW: I am a software developer. I make 68K a year before taxes. [SARCASM] Homeless people have better health insurance than I have [/SARCASM] Abuse will be reported. Lucky…. There are usually a few Canadians standing in line with me when I am going though customs.

Terran 3 replied: "Two words: "Government Regulation""

Lucky replied: "Don't feel bad...hell Canadians drive to Yuma AZ and other border towns to get cheap Mexican meds that last them a whole year."

abaabbaa2000 replied: "i know what you mean but that's burocracy!"

Rhoda replied: "Very strong drug company lobbyists. Barack is trying to change things so people have affordable health care."

R replied: "because people are in it to make money not help people. When a new drug is invented there is a patten preventing generics for X number of years that way the company can make tons off of it before it goes generic. Then it goes generic and only a select few that are common become over the counter because they can make more money if it is a controlled substance rather than Walmart can make their own brand. Bottom line is always money in the health care industry"

dallas dave replied: "you really do not need to worry about customs, you are actually to bring into the country non-narcotic medications for personal use. I posted a link below which is the actual FDA rules for customs. Since I do live near the boarder I buy online and have my meds mailed to my home and I have never had any problems with customs either. and as for your actual question, you already know the answer, its all about the money. money for the drug companies and their contributions to the politicians."

Omeprazole and Protonix? Hi yesterday my doctor prescribed Protonix (pantoprazole) for my acid reflux..So I went to the pharmacy to get it and the pharmacist said it was very expensive around $90 and told me I can get Omeprazole instead which is over-the-counter for only $17 and that the two medicines are the same so I got the cheap one. And I was wondering from experience (if anyone knows). Is Omeprazole and Protonix (pantoprazole) the same thing. Would taking Omeprazole be the same as taking Protonix?

Your Highness replied: "Umm Well, i'm no doctor, but my first thought would be no. It pretty much does the same thing because pantoprazole and omeprazole are ppi's (proton pump inhibitors) but they are not the same thing. Pantoprazole is in Protonix. Omeprazole is in like..Prilosec, or the stuff I take, Zegerid. From my experience they do work differently for different people too..like I started out with Protonix a few months ago and it made me feel awful and even worse. My doctor switched me to Zegerid and the difference was amazing. But...anyway, you should be fine just taking the omeprazole unless theres a specific reason your doctor prescribed pantoprazole."

Ron V replied: "All drugs of this class, proton pump inhibitors or PPI's inhibit the production of stomach acid. Each however might perform this differently depending on their chemical makeup. I personally have found that certain PPI's made me ill while others were perfectly fine. You will need to find one that has the least number of side-effects for you. I tolerate Omeprazole quite well; could not take Protonix (bad stomach cramps). Since it's a generic and costs a lot less why not start with this? Also, be sure to check the interactions of the PPI with other drugs you may be taking. Some of them can cause interactions. Good luck! Ron"

Lea replied: "The drug are different but similar. They are both proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). They are both equally effective. Some people will have better results with one or the other. There is nothing wrong with taking omeprazole instead of protonix. You might want to inform your doctor that you decided to try omeprazole."

Will taking omeprazole affect my contraceptive pill? I've been thinking of taking this for stomach problems. I had two extended periods on a combination of pain medication over the last couple of years (including diclofenac) which has left my stomach lining extremely sensitive. I have occasional bouts of acid reflux and alcohol irritates my stomach much more severely than previously, as does extremely spicy food. I started taking omeprazole last year but stopped when I saw on the contra-indications that it could stop other drugs working properly. I really do not want to get pregnant and am worried that it will interfere with my contraceptive pill. Also, is 20mg a day enough or would 40mg be more effective? I'm living quite far from medical access but do have the pills with me as I bought them over the counter the last time I was in Bangkok.

Geno replied: "Although knowing exactly which contraceptive you're on would certainly help, there won't be an interaction between the omeprazole and any of the dozen-or-so most common estrogen/progestin formulations. You may however want to call your pharmacist and run it by him to make there aren't any possible interactions with other medications you may be taking. And as for the omeprazole - 20mg once daily should be enough to handle anything short of full-blown peptic ulcers or pathological hypersecretory conditions. You could step it up to 20mg twice a day if you really don't see an improvement within a few days, and remember to discontinue use after 14 days. If the symptoms persist while taking the omeprazole or if you have been experiencing frequent heartburn for longer than three months, you should see your physician."

Allergic reaction.... HELP!!!!? I recently had hardware removal in my leg. The doctor prescribed 'Clindamycin' . I thought things were going fine but about a week and a half to two weeks I started to get really bad stomach acid. Thinking that it was just from stress from other things going on in my life, I just got over the counter 'Omeprazole'. After I had taken 'Omeprazole' for two days I broke out with a rash all over my body. I didn't think it was the 'Clindamycin' because I had stopped it two days before I stated taking 'Omeprazole' because my leg looked fine. My rash only appeared after I started taking the 'Omeprazole', and hasn't fully gone away. Now I take Zantac and today I started my cycle of Clindamycin again. A couple hours later my rash started to get worse and it seems that it is the Clindamycin that is causing it. So my questions is, could my body be having a delayed allergic reaction to Clindamycin since I didn't experience or notice any symptoms for those first two weeks that I was taking it? And if that's the case, how long does a antibiotic usually stay in your system so I know when to expect the rash to go down? My doctor has seen the rash when we thought it was the Omeprazole and he said to just use Benadryl. SO now I know what has been causing it, I will stop using the antibiotic since my leg is fine. If I could get an answer for the above two questions and any other recommendations or help that would be great. Thank you so much!

S P replied: "CALL YOUR DOCTOR! You cannot stop an antibiotic and not start a new one. You evidently had a reason for you to be on the antibiotic. If your leg was fine as you say, then the second round of antibiotics would not have been ordered."

does anyone have any homemade remidies for stomach bloating? i tried the counter ones and their rubbish.cheers i suffer from everday bloating that is now making me skip meals, my weight is now taking a tumble. dr's say it will settle and gave me omeprazole for acid but nothing happens. i suffer from a bloating feeling like trapped wind just below my rib cage, i'm not allergic to any foods at all and just one piece of toast and a coffee is enough to make me feel full these days. i take omeprazole everyday for acid but these dont the painfull bloated feeling away. i'm dont have bulimia or anything like that and want my weight back. cheers for any advice

whinetimeisafinetime replied: "I was once given an insider of alternative medicine who swore by this...Fresh mint and ground pomegranate seeds - mixed up - a spoonful before each meal (you can make a batch for several days at a time as long as you keep it in the fridge... at the very least - it wouldn't hurt you:) But I think you should go back to the doctor for some more advice - particuarly if you are losing weight. Hope it goes well for you and you feel better soon... Good Luck!:)"

Sassafrass replied: "My uncle used to mix a couple of teaspoons of baking soda in a glass of water...it is effective if the bloating is from gas"

Jo Jo Gunn replied: "mix baking soda with H20 ( instructions r on the box ) ...works 4 me"

elle f replied: "I dont know Dont eat so may carbohydrates such as white bread (the worse thing you can eat as far as I am concerned!) Try eating fibre rich foods to fill you up. If you get trapped wind, try drinking a cup of tea. Eat porridge as they tend to really help, Gillian McKeith says that it is like a vacuum cleaners for the gut!"

Osh Aka Oisinmagic replied: "Try some sugar water it will help settle your stomach"

medium_of_dance replied: "You could try the Hay Diet. Google it. It works for me. You can eat loads, but just don't combine protein and carbs at the same meal. When I use this method, I don't bloat....I used to feel like i swallowed a house-brick after every meal, lasting for a good 2 -3 hours."

pol replied: "Chances are you're allergic to wheat and dairy products...try using soya products and gluten-free products such as on the 'free from ' shelf at most supermarkets... it cured me!"

bzb replied: "eat lots of ginger.. ginger biscuits... ginger this or ginger that... I'm serious... ginger in any food is the best remedy ever!"

beau nidle replied: "Soda Mints. Any chemist, I swear by them!"

sparky replied: "I suffered a similar thing and my weight dropped to less than 140lbs as I felt full all the time. My stomach would swell up like a football after eating anything. I know you said you're not allergic to any foods, but it doesn't have to be an allergy that causes it, you can merely be intolerant to certain foods. It turned out I was intolerant to fructose and since cutting out grapes, strawberries, honey and limiting apples and other citrus fruit, the problem disappeared, although it took about two weeks. As for products to help, I couldn't find any. I think it's because the gas that they help dispel is often not the gas produced in the intestine by these food intolerances."

briangetmail replied: "try some ginger, you can buy it at the market. You can slice it and put it in a hot cup of water to make a tea or just chew a little. Where I live there's a japanese fast food place and I get it there. I had the same problem with my stomach and this has worked for me."

Aldara plus Omeprazole pluse Diabetes.? Medical professionals only, please. I came to visit my brother who is insulin dependent. On the counter were unopened packages of Aldara (box) and Omeprozole (pill bottle) prescribed the same day. I have been to Web MD and understand what they both are generally prescribed for. Is there a relationship between these drugs, or is it to treat to compeletely exclusive conditions?

wcanoodle replied: "yes. Aldara is actinic keratosis or warts or similar conditions and Omeprazole is for stomach acid conditions. If you read up on this then you would know that those are two different drugs for two different conditions and those conditions don't necessarily have anything to do with diabetes.."

Nausea, stomach pain? I've been suffering from bad nausea everyday now for months. Also at times I get bad pain from the top of my stomach right down to to the bottom of my stomach and sometimes backache. I'm also really tired all the time and at the moment feel so rough I can't hardly go out and do anything. I've been to the Dr's who did the works with a blood test all which came back normal. I've also tried Omeprazole which has made me feel sicker so I've stopped taking them. I've got to go back to the Dr's in a couple of weeks to see what to do next. I've tried all sorts of over the counter medicine such as peto bismol (doesn't stop the nausea), gaviscon for the acid, ginger capsules for the nausea (doesn't work). Just want to feel better really. I'm 27 in 3 weeks time and feel 60

laplandfan replied: "Don't leave it two weeks before seeing the GP. Go now!"

jadie replied: "you need to c a doctor!x!"

Natasha G replied: "sounds bad maybe you would be better off going down your local hospital and getting some answers i wouldn't leave it too long if was you :)"

dawn replied: "have you tried apple cider vinigar it worked for me as i suffer reflux and it will settle your tummy it dont taste very nice but it will work also you could try manuka honey that is brilliant on the stomache good luck i know the feeling and it ain,t nice is it."

Ktloop replied: "think you should make an appointment to see the doctor earlier. Sounds obvious but are you sure you are not pregnant ?"

Tash * replied: "I have similar thing, no idea what it is, but it frequently gets triggered by the smell of food cooking and eating junk. The only thing that eases the nausea for me is the juice of half a lemon in a glass of water with a little sugar. It balances the pH in your stomach, and within a few minutes I will start burping a bit and all the pain and nausea goes away. I know a few other women with similar issues who swear by it. Does it coincide with your hormonal cycle at all? Also, ginger pills never seem to help me, try nibbling preserved ginger instead, its quite yummy. It is usually in the dried fruit section of the supermarket. But I would go to the ER at a hospital, they are more likely to help you there. just tell them what is wrong and that you cant handle it anymore."

The mom replied: "It might just be a combination of your diet and stress, since you don't seem to respond to any of the usual things. If you are not eating a proper diet or have regular meals, or if you are under stress over something personal or at work, that can play havoc on a digestive system. Medications won't work, because it's not really a physical problem causing it. If you are trying to burn your candle at both ends, and the middle, not eating right and stressed out, your stomach is often the first to rebel. Perhaps a little rest and relaxation, some real food at regular intervals might be what you need most. And I'd also consider trying to see the doctor a little sooner, just to eliminate something like gall bladder problems. If you notice the trouble in conjunction with a fatty food or meal, that might be your answer. If that is the case, none of the medications you mentioned would be of any help. Hope you find your answer soon though and get to feeling better."

Sharon W replied: "I'm just recovering from almost exactly the same thing, only I was actually vomitting, although it did start off as just nausea, stomach pains, all the stuff you describe. It all started completely out of the blue in February 2006. I ended up with seven or eight visits to A&E between February and August last year, being put on a drip, pumped full of drugs, xrays, scans, ultrasounds and then discharged about a week later with no answers. At first they said it was my gall bladder, but that proved untrue. They then did the camera down the throat test, and discovered that my stomach was bleeding so I was put onto Omeprazole and Gaviscon Advanced and metroclopramide (anti sickness pills), it sounds like they have forgotten them with you. But it didn't sort out the sickness, stomach pains, tiredness etc. I kept getting. Finally they sent a gynae consultant to see me who after two different types of ultra sound scans discovered I had a whole host of internal problems in my stomach. I've had major surgery in October last year and feel so much better than I did. Have they done x-rays, or an ultrasound scan where the pain is coming from. Maybe diagnosis was easier for me as my doctor wouldn't come out to me and made me ring for an ambulance and all the tests were done in A&E and the wards I was admitted to. I hope you feel better soon. I'm only 38 and I know how bad it can be not knowing what the hell is going one with your own body. Good luck."

hans replied: "are you sure youre not pregnant? if not then maybe you have come down with something like flu or something"

Donna D replied: "Greasy or high fat food and acidic food like citrus juices, carbonated drinks should be avoided. Home remedies for stomach pain, belly ache can be found at"

David L replied: "don,t wait go get a second oppinion"

This I don't understand!!? Why are some medications cheaper to get with a prescription? Like say omeprazole? I can get it cheaper by presciption then over the counter. I wonder why?

Impish Jerome replied: "the manufacturer of the drug; also if the drug is a brand name or generic. also if the demand is high or low; also if there are few or many doctors prescribing that particular drug. Or just might be a store's pharmist's special. /Jerome"

BroD replied: "Insurance covers prescription meds but not OTC stuff, so (if you have insurance) you're just paying the co-pay for the prescription med."
