mediation, aromatherapy, relaxing baths, music, positive mantras (a statement that causes you to feel better by repeating it, it can be anything you want it to be: i am peacful, or i am totally relaxed and serene, etc.)
gaiam.com has some really good mediation, healing and relaxation cd's that i use to help me when i need to relax.
i dont only wait until i have an attack to use any of these, i use aromatherapy daily with candles and i also mix oils in my lotions and use some drops in my baths to soak for a few minutes before taking my showers.
i also try to meditate a few times weekly and love listening to music.

Can Metaprolol Tartrate be used as needed , once in a while to stop panic attacks? I was given Metoprolol Tartrate by a cardiologist after I acually asked him for Beta Blockers for my panic attacks. He said that I really don't need it but he can give me one to use it if I need it. He had prescibed me metoprolol tartrate 25mg and told me that take it ONLY if I get heart palpitations during a panic attack 2 times a day for one day and stop it till the next attack occurs. But he also told me to try Xanax first, and if the blood preassure does not go down , and the palpitations do not stop than told me to take Metoprolol tartrate.
I haven't had any panic attacks last more than 30 minites , and both my blood preassure and racing heart rate goe down right after I take xanax, so I did not use this medication yet.
I read about this drug, it says it needs to be taken daily. I also saw that Propranolol and atenolol seem to be more effective for panic disorder.
I do not have any cardiac problmes, I had cleared all tests. But suffer from severe anxiety and panic disorder which can get my heart to beat 110 to 120, The highest 130, no chest pain at all. This episode lasts about 20 minutes to 30 minutes.
I run everyday, cholesterol levels are very good. LDL 41 HDL 80, Triglycerides 27.
Holter, EKG, Stress test and echo had not shown any problems.
But I suffer from panic disorder.
My blood preassure is usually 110 over 70 but it also goes high during a panic attack to first 140 over 70, if I take Xanax right there it stabilizes and panic goes away, if I don't than my blood preassure keeps going higher to 150 over 80, 160, over 80, The highest 170 over 80. And goes down back to normal right after I take Xanax with in 10 minutes,
I get those panic attacks 5 -6 times a year. sometimes 10 times a year.
what should I do? shoukd I take the Xanax or the Metoprolol tartrate during a panic attack?
ג∂ʅʯϛɐ replied: "If the Xanax works, it would probably be better to stick with the Xanax. I've been given Propranolol for performance anxiety, but I hardly use it because 1) It directly works against my Albuterol for my asthma making both ineffective and 2) the benzodiazepines have (in myself at least) proven to be more effective. Generally, beta-blockers are for those with high blood pressure, and since yours is usually normal, and high blood pressure is symptom of a panic attack, I don't think that beta-blockers are the best decision. Plus, you say the Xanax works, so if you have something that works well, you should probably just stick with that. Just make sure you take it before your blood pressure gets too high, and it sounds like you will be fine."
is there something wrong with my heart, or is it just panic attacks? I have actually had this problem for as long as I can remember.. I remember when I was still in school.. probably jr. high.. my heart would palpitate sometimes.. just for a few seconds.. and then quit.. and that would only happen every so often.. maybe a couple times a month or even less.. they did an ekg on me and blood work and said everything was normal and that I was just having panic attacks.. as the years went on.. I can remember being in class during high school and my heart would start racing for no apparent reason.. and then after a few seconds it would quit.. then I started being woke up by it.. It would like my whole body would jerk and I would wake up to find my heart racing and I would be out of breath.. and everytime I would get close to falling asleep it would happen again.. and just recently.. this past march things started getting really freaky.. One night in march I was just sitting on my bed playin a game and all the sudden I just didn't feel right.. I couldnt breath and my heart felt like it was beating out of my chest.. only this time it didn't stop.. I felt like I was going to pass out and my fiance caught me as I began to fall off the bed. Things continued all night that night.. and the palpitations were lasting for 10-20 minutes at a time.. I got really nauseated.. light headed.. so dehydrated I was chewing on my toungue.. I didnt have even a little bit of saliva in my mouth.. I was too afraid to go to the hospital that night so I just paced back and forth.. kept going outside for fresh air.. and even made my fiance take me for a drive.. finally things calmed down enough to where I could get a little rest.. well the next day i started feeling somewhat better.. but towards the end of the day.. it started again.. my heart was racing.. and I couldnt breath.. we went to the er.. they did and ekg and said it looked normal.. but they kept me hooked up on it.. while i was hooked up I had another attack.. my heart started racing and reach 160 or more.. i felt like i was going to pass out.. they told me to bare down as if having a bowel movement and i did and after a few minutes my heart rate slowly started going back down but it only stabelized in the 90s.. they ended up having to give me 3 doses of metoprolol through my iv to get my heart rate back in the 70s where they wanted it.. then they prescribed me metoprolol and an anxiety medication.. they didnt seem to help a whole lot.. they took away the palpitations.. but from that point on I have had a constant pressure in my chest.. and I found out recently that i am pregnant so they took me off the medications... well now it's starting back up... and tonight.. i was laying in bed.. and it was almost like my heart jerked.. I felt it beat really hard and fast for a second.. My whole body jerked.. and then I felt like a burning and pressure sensation which is still there to this moment and thats been over an hour ago.. also.. i noticed early when I got out of the shower.. I could feel my heart beating really hard it almost felt like it was twitching and I looked down and my left breast I could actually see what it looked to me like it was twitching along with my heart.. I dont know what's going on.. It's really starting to worry me.. the doctors don't take me seriously.. I have wore a 24 hr heart monitor.. had cat scans.. x rays.. and tons of blood work. and they still come up with nothing.. last month however.. they did think they found a blood clot in my lung on the xray so they started me on heparin and 2 hours later did a lung scan to find no blood clot there.. so they said it was a mistake.. but i wonder if it was just a small one and the heparin got rid of it by the time they did the other scan.. could this all be related? Or am I crazy.. I cant see it being all just panic attacks when most of the time im calm.. just watching tv when it happens.. or laying in bed.. I have an apt. with my family doctor in a couple weeks but I just want to know if anyone has had similar symptoms.. or may know what it could be.. I would really appreciate any advice or information.. Thanks.
jabjab replied: "Hay love - it probably could be panic attacks.
With you waking up at night with them, I imagine that is probably sleep apnea, I have the same thing.
You wake up all of a sudden breathing really fast, feeling extremely sick and all you want to do is drink a glass of water and your scared to fall back alseep. I get that because I ahve sleep apnea - you possibly have the same thing.
I also used to get extremely bad heart palpitations which gave me terrible anxiety - which it sounds like you have. I would think I was having a heart attack when I wasnt. I eventually when to a Chiropractor, and he noticed one my nerves wasnt funtioning properly which was causing me bad heart palpitations - after seeing the chiro I rarely get palpitations now, and therefore I rarely get panic attacks. Maybe you should give that a try?
Also, have you ever noticed that during the day perhaps you sort of 'forget' to breath? Sort of like sleep apnea, but when you are awake? Maybe keep an eye out for that too.
But love, I would definitely recommend a good Chiropractor...they have done wonders for me!!! :)."

To me, it sounds like something is wrong with your heart because if you are doing things that are calming and relaxed and your heart just randomly does stuff..how could that be anxiety or a panic attack?!! Thats a good idea to check if any of your family members has had something like that once..it could be genetic. Well, i hope every thing goes well and i hhope your pregnancy goes well too!! XD
Good luck"
Amanda replied: "You need to see a cardiologist for more specific test. I have a heart condition that sounds similar to yours. It is called tachycardia (fast heart rate). Mine usually beats in the 90, but can reach into 180. It happens anytime it wants to, so to make sure that you don't need special medication for something like I have you need to see a cardiologist."

Do you take medicine for high blood pressure? If you take medicine for high blood pressure, what's the name of the medicine and "your" side effects. The reason for the question is this:
I was prescribed metoprolol tartrate july 9 of this year. i had panic attacks and fast heart beat while resting. my dr. told me to stop taking it (didn't wean me off or anything- said it wouldn't hurt). july 18 started taking methyldopa. july 22 was in er due to chest pains/extreme fatigue. did ekg, stayed in chest pain center 24 hours..x-rays, nothing there. dr said symptoms come from methlydopa. haven't had any panic attacts, but i feel as though i have something in my throat to swallow and theres nothing there, can't even sweep the floor without heart beating fast and getting exhaused, went in target the other day and had to hurry out because felt exhausted, also have stomach problems daily. do you think i am feeling like this due to this medicine. oh also i'm on an iron supplement prescribed by my dr. while in the er my hematocrit levels and mean cell volume were slight low; not severly low. just want to know do you guys think it's the meds.
♥HyLy♥ replied: "I have been on Methyldopa 250mg 2x daily for several months. I have stage 1 hypertension. My BP runs about 140/90. I have noticed uncontrollable muscle spasms from Methyldopa. It's to the point where I can't sleep at night. It works very well in lowering my BP, but I am going to talk to my doctor to see if there is anything I can do for the spasms. BP medication dilates your blood vessels to take stress off of your heart so that it doesn't have to pump so hard to get blood through your body's extremities.
I have had EKGs done numerous times for various reasons. They use EKGs to detect heart attacks. I have noticed sharp pains on the left side of my chest several times, and I'm going to mention that to my doctor, too. I have had the "something stuck in my throat" feeling too, but I think it's when I take a pill it gets stuck sometimes if I don't drink water with it instead of after swallowing it. I would go to your doctor and have them do a CBC. The will draw a few tubes of blood to check your liver enzymes and your kidney function, along with your regular blood counts. If your body doesn't like the medicine, the CBC will show an elevation in your liver enzymes and sometimes your kidney function too. The fatigue is most likely a result of the medication. If you are over weight, that can cause fatigue also.
Your best bet is to have a CBC done. Don't just stop taking Methyldopa, because you have to be weaned off of it. Your body can have adverse reactions if you just cut it off."
Can beta blockers cause heart failure? The question is pretty much that simple, I take 12.5 mg of metoprolol a day for high heart rates associated with panic attacks. I am curious if this drug can cause or increase the risk of heart failure (22 male , not overweight , only smoked a limited amount of time a year total .. quit , dont drink , and dont exercise)
Thanks
I did quit smoking.. I only smoked for maybe a year.. havent smoked in over 2...
And Tich.. My heart rate was not responding to uh harmless exercise it simply rises when I have 190 bpm ish which is very scary and over time can be quite as harmful as what you said the med does.
anxiety/panic attack*
Kate_brad replied: "Id really give up the smokes! I take Inderal wich is a beta blocker for my migraines and it says it can cause congenative heart failure, if you are young and healthy and no family history of it I wouldnt worry though"
TICH4592 replied: "Yes, most certainly beta blockers can (and do) cause death,
from both cardiac failure (when your B/P is low) and stroke due to bursting of blood vessels when your B/P's are high enough.
This is because slowing the pulse rate incontrovertibly RAISES systolic pressure for any given cardiac work level (it must), and -at the other end of the spectrum-, prevents the heart from doing work properly which SHOULD be performed.
Quite simply, lowering pulse rate from 'optimum' forces the heart do do its work at a lowered efficiency, -effectively increasing its own work-load. If it's already struggling to do its work, this extra load impels it even further towards failure.
There are many medications to alleviate the effects of panic attacks. Beta blockaging is the most potentially lethal way to treat the problem.
Why? - Quite simple. The raised pulse-rate is not the primary cause of your malady. Raised pulse-rate in fact isn't even a problem. When additional blood flow is called for due to exercise (say), the pulse rate rises automatically anyway, -quite harmlessly.
In your case it is the brain's method of dealing with the original cause. So treating the symptom
(high pulse) not only ignores the problem and fails to address it, but it OPPOSES the body's own natural way of dealing with it, and the brain of course has to react in yet another way, the best it can.
Quite obvious when you think about it, isn't it.
EDIT: I totally believe you Charles, and was merely pointing out that a fast pulse is (of itself) not life-threatening, because a fast pulse is one normal reaction of the central nervous sytem... but I well can see how disturbing it must feel to you.
I would say again, however, that merely bringing down your pulse rate doesn't address the problem of what the causes of your (panic) attacks are. They will continue until found and solved."
Tracy M replied: "Anything that compromises the heart's function can cause heart failure.
If the heart is weak it cannot pump efficiently, you can have heart failure. If it is too "stiff" and doesn't have much compliance it cannot pump efficiently, you can have heart failure. If it beats too fast or too slow, it cannot pump efficiently. So to answer your question, yes.
BUT, most people, and certainly someone your age, it is unlikely that it would cause heart failure in you. You are also on a very low dose of the med. You should monitor your HR and blood pressure at home, and bring it to your next doctor's appointment. Also, a lot of people cannot tolerate this medication because it makes them feel very tired. If you don't like the way it makes you feel, see if there is something else they can try?
Hope this helps."
Racing Heart- seeking answers- Dr's Nurses someone liek that? I have panic attacks I will openly admit to you, And these .. racing heart rates occur at the same time as them.. (been diagnosed with Panic Disorder) now I will get rates from 130-180 that can last 2-5 hours before slowing down.. And I have a panic attack at the same time which causes which impossible to tell. I had an EKG like a month or less before these started or I noticed them and it was NSR Tachy I think 110 bpm? nothing abnormal.... I went to my doctor who is apparently also an internist.. she put me on a beta blocker called... Metoprolol? on its lowest dose.. I am thinking about going back for more tests.. its been going on for a year now. I get them like I get my panic attacks randomly and spuracticly.
I was just curious what this sounds like it could be.. I just turned 22 last month (dont drink smoke lol or exercise and im not .. and my parents say my family has no history of heart disease and stuff. so I suppose I am looking for some answers here. Can someone help me out?
angelfire replied: "My uncle is super healthy but has a racing heart beat, he just takes medication for it. If you feel something is not right, go back to as many doctors as it takes until you feel comfortable with a diagnosis, only you really know your body."
Sweet Pea replied: "I have been going through the same things the last few month. Racing heart rate, panic attacks, it is so scary. I am on a low dosage of beta blockers twice a day now. I am 42. I was thinking of getting a second opinion. I am taking Metropol. I have Sinus Tachycardia or the Artro, the cardiologist said it could be either one but he said it was the Sinus kind. I don't smoke. I am somewhat overweight so I am trying to keep that down.
I also have the Mitral Valve Prolapse Redundant which is causing the symptoms."
Have you ever took Fluoxetine with Digoxin? I'm on 0.25mg of Digoxin for my rapid heart rate I also take
25mg of Metoprolol when I have an episode and due this I
now have really bad anxiety and panic attacks so my Doc
just prescribed 10 mg of Fluoxeine (prozac) has anyone ever
took these of so did you have any side effects I've had these
for a few weeks and I'm so scared to take them it take me hours
just to take meds once I decide I want to also I was at the ER and
she wanted to give me Xanax is that any good thanks
has anyone tried herbs for anxiety and would any of that have any interactions with what I'm taking
champiampi replied: "I recently wrote a paper on the contraindications (harmful interactions) between anti-depressants with heart medications, so this is a little up my ally. Basically i would advise switching to zoloft since you are on digoxin.
Digoxin is a very potent and potential toxic glycoside, it interferes with many targets on the heart, not just the sodium/potassium channels which it is widely perscribed for. Thier is one interaction in particular which makes digoxin potentially deadly, and that is its interactions with a protein called HERG. Dont worry about the details of this, but you should know that fluoxetine has been shown in the litterature to be statistically significant in negatively interacting with this protein too. HERG is the major red flag when considering heart medications or medications in patients with cardiac problems.
Zoloft has actually been shown in numerous clinical trials to be least interactive and have the greatest therapeutic index (margin of safety) in cardiac patients.
Best of luck."
high heart rate and scared need advice? hello I have in the past had heart rates of 150-180 sometimes 130.. I usually take 12.5 mg of metoprolol.. today I was forced to take 25 mg. I suffer baddly from anxiety and panic attacks without the beta blocker the rates can last 2+ hours.. ( i also take 2-4 mg of xanax)
My question can anxiety be causing this its been happening off and on for a year now I had an EKG and it was normal and no abonormal hard sounds either...
I took my beta blocker today at 3 am ( woke up at 11:30 pm) and I was anxious and then after coming up the stairs and such it started racing.. it raced for 45 minutes I called my dr asked if it was safe to take the other half.. she said yes. I took it. that was 40-45 minutes ago.. the highest I checked it was 150. It is now 108 ish bpm.. Just looking for advice not to be scared further lol.
22 , no family history of this stuff, not overweight dont smoke , dont drink. dont exercise.
without the beta blocker it has lasted for about 2- 4 hours before it slowed down or I calmed down im not sure which...
my current regime is simply 12.5 mg of beta blocker (metoprolol) once per day. sigh
I was told anxiety attacks dont cause heart attacks by my doctor
does anyone think this sounds like svt?
whitetara replied: "maybe if you could go and do some light water aerobics in a pool and start taking vitamins. if it is anxiety without exercise the movement in the water might relax."
d b replied: "try to relax. If this has been going on for a year, it's obviously survivable. . . but, you really need a sit down with a gp, and probably a cardiology consult, and definitely a psych consult - there are way better meds available, i think, and also that you should not be taking the beta blocker on an "as needed basis".
You need to work with someone to get your anxiety level down, and get on a medication schedule that will keep you at a reasonable heart rate and rhythm. . . specialists are great, but it would be terrific if you could find someone to coordinate and explain all of this to you, and help you find the right regimen. . . good luck!"
Victoria J replied: "stop doing what you are doing"
girlschildren replied: "yes anixtey can cause this and anixtey can cause heartatacks and strokes i take medicine to keep my heart at normal rythem and it still runs about 90"
Toprol and the side effects? Alright.. so here's the story. I have bicuspid aortic stenosis and high blood pressure. Everytime i eat anything, my heart rate SOARS, i get weak and dizzy, so they put me on the metoprolol ER (extended release).. 50MG daily. If i dont take them, and i DARE to eat anything, my heart races like MAD and i feel extremely out of breathe and exhausted. If i walk even a tiny distance, i am extremely out of breathe and have to sit.... I just took one about an hour ago, and my heart is beating weirdly. Skipping beats, palpitations, thumping, hard feeling beats, etc. I have noticed these getting worse recently.. (over the past month). I swear it brings on my anxiety issues, also, as i do suffer from anxiety & panic attacks... Then my throat feels like it is closing up! Are these side effects of the toprol? I have so many medical issues, i can never figure out which is causing the tight throat feeling/shortness of breathe and anxiety issues! HELP!
outlaw_biker53 replied: "why are you asking people here, laymen, that question? you can look metoprolol up by doing a simple web search then reading the side effects for yourself. another good idea is to call your doctors office for the answers to your medicine questions!"
Racing heart in the morning? I have anxiety issues and panic attacks quite often. I also have heart problems & high blood pressure. Was put on toprol (metoprolol is what i take), and i have lorazepam for anxiety although it makes me feel high as a kite, so i dont like taking them... the doctor also prescribed me citalopram... i havent started taking it yet, but i know i should. But when i wake up in the AM, my heart is always racing. I can just sit up in bed, walk to the bathroom, etc. I've had tachycardia issues for a year or so now. Ugh... what is wrong?!
con⋅fi⋅den⋅tial replied: ":*(
i have no idea but are you having bad dreams ?!"
confused as hell replied: "Have you talked to your doctor about all of this? You need to be taking the medicine they prescribe you because they obviously feel like it's the best option for you."
gangadharan nair replied: "The type of tachycardia has to be ascertained by ECG, Echocardiography and Intracardiac electrophysiology study (EPS). Medications such as thyroid pills, asthma drugs, beta blockers, or anti-arrhythmics can cause heart palpitations. (Medications to treat an irregular heart rhythm will sometimes cause a different irregular rhythm).
Metoprolol is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. It also is used to prevent angina (chest pain) and to treat heart attacks. Extended-release (long-acting) metoprolol also is used in combination with other medications to treat heart failure. Metoprolol is in a class of medications called beta blockers. It works by slowing the heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as hard.
Lorazepam is used to relieve anxiety.
Citalopram is used to treat depression. Citalopram is in a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance."
