Overdose on fexofenadine & loratadine? I have severe allergies and I have been taking the generic for allegra (fexofenadine 180 mg). It works for about an hour and then stops working. I have been taking 2 pills a day, when your supposed to take one. Last night around 10 pm I took one, and then again this morning at 9 am. At 10 pm today I took a store brand for Claritin D (loratadine 10mg + PSEUDOEPHEDRINE 280 mg). would that be enough to overdose? I have an appointment at an allergy specialist the 31st. I know I shouldnt be messing around with this stuff, but I really cant function well without taking that much. My doctor is as idiot and just keeps changing my perscription when I complain. Definitely changing docs ASAP and going to the specialist. I read on wikipedia that rats tested with fexofenadine up to 800mg had no reaction, but im not a rat :) Perhaps theres someone out there with experience pertaining to my question & bad seasonal allergies. Thank you all in advance for your input!

Krostina replied: "Be careful! I wouldn't keep that up, sounds like you need to talk to your doc-Allegra shouldn't wear off like that-maybe you need a different kind of medicine."

lizzy_22_1999 replied: "Way more pills then that. You need to go to the doctor and stop messing around with otc crap. Sounds like you need to get more testing for your allergies to know what kind and to what exactly. So they can treat you better. That way you will not have to take so much to get some relief. Good luck and if you think your going to overdose its too much."

OpalMine replied: "call a pharmacist, they know how much is too much"

What does Loratadine do? Ok i went to see my doctor because I had a hard time, breathing through my nose (I would usually have one side of the nostril cleared up and the other closed up) I used to think it was a cold until I figured out it was probably an allergy or something. So he said I did have allergies, but just in general he didn't specify to what...so I am guessing: dust, pollen, some weird plants, etc. So he said I should start taking these pills, called Vagran D [I live in Argentina, sorry lol] and it's basically composed of loratadine and pseudoephedrine, it comes with 12 pills and he said I should take one per day even though the instructions say 1 every 12 hrs. My question is, what is it supposed to do? I am on my 4th day and I can kind of breathe easier through my nose throughout the day, even though it kind of still feels congested. At night its just the same, and it makes it hard to wake up with a really dry throat. Usually when I lay to go sleep one side would close up and it's not mucus or anything, it's just like locked up way up in my nose and I can't make it open haha. And I still breathe through my mouth at night because I can't use my nose. So any helpful information would be nice, and my pee is more yellow now? I hope that is not bad. I do hydrate a lot. Thanks in advance!

What is the most powerful nasal decongestant available? Oxymetazoline hydrochloride and pseudoephedrine sprays cause rebound congestion. Oral pseudoephedrine and loratadine do not work. Does ANYTHING work that can be taken for long periods of time for completely eliminating nasal congestion?

Sherry replied: "I have had more luck using a nasal rinse and the snore patches. I also like the fact that there are no drugs involved."

Is an anti-histamine (eg Lorano) the same as a drying up agent like Sudafed ? I take the two together - they contain loratadine and pseudoephedrine. I was under the impression that I COULD use both together - a doctor told me this - but the pharmacist said, the other day, that they have the same function and I should not take them together. Can anyone comment on this?

Bozema replied: "Sudfed is a decongestant - trying to get your sinuses to clear by running. Antihistamines are intended to dry up sinues. But both can make you sleepy and I wouldn't combine. My doctor recommends skipping the Sudafed and using Afrin nasal spray as a decongestant combined with the loratadine as an antihistamine. This will prevent drowsiness. Afrin should only be used for a few days, otherwise it can rebound on you and your congestion will come back."

ck replied: "Anti-histamines and decongestants are 2 different drugs, but often prescribed together. Anti-histamines block the histamine reactions caused by various allergens. So, basically, they block the allergic reaction that you might get from something. Decongestants, on the other hand, dry out your sinuses. They relieve the congestion in your sinus cavities, and the result is that everything is overly dried. The 2 drugs are often taken together, but talk to your pharmacist and ask why he/she suggested that you not take them. If you want further clarification, talk to your doctor."

John replied: "ya"

a p replied: "Antihistamines block the effect of histamine. Runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, etc.. Many antihistamines also have a drying (anticholeneric) effect and cause drowsiness. We use them to help stop sinus drainage, which causes all sorts of problems, like lung congestion, sore throats, ear congestion, coughing, runny nose, and so on. Decongestants, like pseudoepedrine, constrict blood vessels in the nose and reduce swelling, opening up the sinus passages and allowing us to breath and the sinuses to drain. Having the sinuses blocked leads to sinus headaches and sinus infections. All that mucus stuck in the sinuses gets infected. Decongestants are stimulants (keep you awake) and raise your blood pressure. They don't actually have a drying effect like most antihistamines. You can use them together. Actifed, Drixoral, Contac, Deconamine, Dimetapp, Benadryl Decongestant and many other OTC cold medications contain both an antihistamine and a decongestant. To some extent, the drowsiness caused by the antihistamine is offset by the stimulation caused by the decongestant. With non-sedating antihistamines (like loratadine) usually the stimulation is strongest, and they keep you awake at night. With regular antihistamines combined with a decongestant, like Benadryl Decongestant and the others listed above, the antihistamine has the stronger effect and they still cause drowsiness. I hope you just misunderstood what the pharmacist said, because you obviously can use them together, even buy them together in a single product."

written statement on drug tests false postive? I was prescribed pseudoephedrine & loratadine from my doctor, 4 days later I given a blood drug test and results were detected for Amphetamines. i do not use drugs. I went back to my doctor who gave me the prescription and he is no longer in the network. i need a written statement on false postive drug tests from a lab or doctor can anyone help me?

ingenuo2002 replied: "you have to find the doctor"

Lisa A replied: "Neither pseudoephedrine nor loratadine will cause a positive result for amphetimines. Neither is an amphetamine. So what did you really take?"

Are there interactions between Metformin and Loratadine (claritin)? I don't have diabetes, but have PCOS. I usually take 1 generic Claritin called Loratadine, daily. I'm now also taking Metformin daily. I haven't taken my loratadine for about a week, but want to start back up...I woke up and couldn't breathe through my nose, but couldn't take a sudafed. Metformin interacts with pseudoephedrine. I'll be asking a pharmacist when I get a chance, but thought I'd ask on here first to see if anyone knew off hand.

Chrissy D replied: "Loratadine is fine with Metformin. Plain Loratadine is pretty much fine with everything, you just wouldn't want to double up with another allergy medicine."

Can I take 2 Claritin 12hr at the same time daily instead of one Claritin D 24hr daily ? the directions for taking claritin d 12hr (loratadine 5 mg/ pseudoephedrine 120 mg) is 1 tablet every 12 hours and the claritin d 24hr (loratadine 10 mg/ pseudoephedrine 240 mg) is 1 tablet a day

KY Physician replied: "no you cant take 2 12 hr tabs at once and expect them to last 24 hrs. they will both get in your system the first 12 hours(and you will be wired from the double dose of sudafed) and then you'll have nothing the second 12 hrs."

Can I take 2 Claritin D 12hr at the same time daily instead of one Claritin D 24hr daily ? the directions for taking claritin d 12hr (loratadine 5 mg/ pseudoephedrine 120 mg) is 1 tablet every 12 hours and the claritin d 24hr (loratadine 10 mg/ pseudoephedrine 240 mg) is 1 tablet a day

kay_flood replied: "so taking two 12 hours will work the same as one 24hour? NO!!! what you do is get a double 12 hour dose and no coverage for the last 12 hours. You are talking about time release pills. You can however take a 12 pill at 7 am and another at 7pm and get the 24 hour coverage."

Does Somebody knows a remedy to cure o help with Allergies? I being trying Loratadine, ans Tylenol Allergies, amd nothing happen, Nasal Sprays helps but only for the moment, the anything helps is Pseudoephedrine, but I don't want to be taking this everyday, do you know something o some home remedy that helps!! My allergie it's for Wheater and season Change, Thanks!! Cooker, Local Honey, it's and special Honey, or regular Honey? Thanks!!

cooker_upper1 replied: "Any air born allergy (pollen, mold, pet dander, dust, etc.) can be cured by taking a teaspoon of LOCAL honey each day. Your body works with the local honey to develop immunities gradually over a couple of months. Stay away from medication that is antihistamines and decongestants-they dry out your body causing sinus complications and, over time, possible kidney deterioration. You will also notice that you get fewer cold and flu symptoms as the local honey takes effect."

jane B replied: "For seasonal allergies, it might help if you take quercetin. It's a natural remedy but you can buy it at your local pharmacy. "Quercetin acts as a natural antihistamine reducing allergy symptoms without any drowsy side effects. It reduces histamine amounts released by stabilizing cell membranes so that they become less sensitive to allergens. " Hope this helps!"

Pharmacology question/drug interactions (NOT recreational)? I am taking several medications and I am concerned that they may be counteracting eachother. These are NOT taken recreationally. Are there any pharmacologists out there that can give me more informations? I am on: Lithium carb, 450-900mg per day Alprazolam, 1-2 mg per day (both of the above doctor prescribed) and for my allergies/asthma, since the prescription meds are too expensive (over $150 per month) I have been taking either claritin-D (loratadine/pseudoephedrine) (OR) just a plain loratadine tablet plus a straight ephedrine tablet (10mg) when the asthma gets very bad (I was told that ephedrine is better than pseudoephedrine for asthma). How will these medications interact with eachother? I repeat, I am not taking any of these meds for recreational or weight loss use. I am not looking for medical advice either, I will talk to my Dr. on the next visit, just wanted to start here since. Thanks! oops, well, yes I guess I am looking for "medical advice" to a point, I just meant from a chemistry viewpoint

ApoNiLAPU-LAPU replied: "It would really be best if you went to your medical doctor for the answers to your question! Getting your answers in this forum may prove to be dangerous for your health. Medicines taken for a specific condition are given and tailor fitted for a particular patient always by a trained professional---in this case an MD."

b00zebuzz replied: "your alprazolam & lithium will not interact w/ your claritin d or your pseudoephedrine meds cuz your allergy meds do not contain diphenhydramine which would have increased the drowsiness effect of the alprzolam , risking cns depression. your lithium will not interact w/your particular allergy meds either. since they dont contain ACE inhibiting components like hbp drugs do, and the ephedrine is not a powerful stimulant on its own like amphettamines are. so there are no "amping up" or counteracting of either of the drugs u are taking w/ your allergy meds."

AbeLincolnParty replied: "both the pseudoephedrine and ephedrine promote high blood pressure, so I would not take them the same day. alprazolam like other valium chemical cousins impairs memory and so is bad for job performance, learning in general, and tends to increase the risk of automobile accidents. I would minimize this if possible. long term lithium therapy is hard on the kidneys, the following link suggests that once a day dosing (once a stable dose if found) allows the blood levels to trough (get to a lowest point) and that is thought to be easier on the kidneys. They do not have any standard protocol as far as I can see of saying, be on it for so many months, then off for a while to let the kidneys have a vacation. The antipsychotic haloperidol is neurotoxic with lithium, but they have not done any experiments in animals as far as I know to evaluate the neural effects of other antipsychotic or even haloperidol with lithium. see the Merck Manual links below: "
