For Those Who Have Used Wellbutrin To Stop Smoking? Please tell me your experience. Did you notice anything at first or did it take a while before it helped with quitting smoking? Side effects? Pros and Cons. Have you tried any of the other prescriptions for quitting smoking? Please give as much info as possible. Thank you in advance.

Nay replied: "It worked for me, I have been quit for one year seven months now. it took about two weeks to get into my system but you will start to notice that you don't want a cigarette. You will start to notice that you are not only addicted but you have the habit of just picking one up out of habit when you really don't want one. You need to break not only the addiction but the habit as well. It really made a difference for me and really helped so that I could focus on the fact, the habit was an issue also, so I could avoid situations where I would pick a cigarette up and then realize that I really didn't want it. Take the medication as prescribed and don't break them up because they are time release. I also noticed that if I took them to late they would keep me up at night. Also watch the amount of caffeine that you drink with them because this also seemed to affect the medication and kept me up at night. I read the papers that came with the medication and there are a lot of side affects but they can affect people differently, so I would recommend reading the insert just incase you have any of the side affect. I wish you the best of luck and trust me you will see how much better you feel and it is worth it! Always remember that if you have a slip up think about the reasons that you quit so you don't start smoking again. Don't punish yourself if you slip up because that only makes it worse, just keep on trying. I had several slip up's but I didn't let it discourage me to smoke the whole pack. Eventually you learn that if you slip it only makes the next few days hard until it is out of your system. I have tried the gum in the past and I was only smoke free for two months. I found that Wellburtin worked best for me. Good Luck!"

nancy j replied: "Hi Laurie, I was prescribed Wellbutrin over 15 yrs ago for anxiety symptoms. My doctor at the time also put me on this one to help me quit smoking. I tried it for two weeks. It did not help me quit smoking but it did make me gain weight!! I stopped using it,and asked to use something else for my anxiety. but if you have the desire to quit smoking it probably will help you. I have not tried any other rx's to quit smoking. I am not ready to quit and when or if I am I would probably use one of the patches. Those do work for alot of people."

Have any of you used Wellbutrin to stop smoking? I've done a little research on it and it seems as if there aren't as many side effects like Chantix. I know that it's a depression med but it is also used to help you stop smoking

florida girl 79 replied: "My husband did a few years ago and he didn't have any side effects and he did stop smoking so it does work, good luck."

just me replied: "I did but it really didn't help me.. I finally quit smoking 2 years ago and I did it on my own... Strong will power, its the best. Good luck"

Josh replied: "I used it briefly, ended up getting hives. It had some rather strange side effects. Also used Chantix, which made me queasy and gave me vivid dreams, nothing serious. A minority can't use it because they get some of the side effects you mentioned. But Chantix is the more effective med."

Has anyone else taken Wellbutrin to stop smoking? I am on it now, but I have only slowed smoking, not really stopped. I was told to wait up to 4 weeks to really lose the need to smoke. I do like the fact that it has improved my mood!

gin_in_mi replied: "Wellbutrin is an anti-depressant.. hence the mood improvment... I tried it to stop smoking.. I was told to take it for 7 days.. and on the 7th day to stop smoking cold turkey.. didn't work for me... However... I have 2 family members that are trying the new one out and have BOTH stopped smoking... one was a 50+ yr smoker...."

Sacoomie replied: "I started taking Wellbutrin than 3 weeks later on Wed, 14 Dec 2005 I finally stop smoking"

pinks replied: "I had a friend who did. She said it worked."

Melissa T replied: "it will improve your mood because people take it as an anti depressant...but it will take a few weeks for you to see a change in smoking."

Bernadette replied: "Wellbutrin SR 150 mg. is an antidepressant that is the same drug sold under the name Zyban that is marketed as a smoking cessation drug. They are both the same."

I started taking zyban (wellbutrin) to stop smoking. I am getting very depressed on it. Is this normal? I thought it was an anti-depressant and I had 5 sminoff ice on it and black out so bad hummiliating myself. Since then im like so sad on it.

jahspromise replied: "first, you are not supposed to drink while taking anti depressants. There are others you can take if you dont like wellbutrin, have your doctor swich you. It could aslo take a few weeks to see real effects."

dcluvstuff replied: "Please stop drinking! Do one or the other, but never both. Zyban is an anti-depressant. That was its original function, but doctors noticed patients taking zyban, were also stopping smoking. Hence,it is now used for that purpose also. Be careful"

Steve R replied: "You can't mix alcohol when taking medications, you will get sick."

how does wellbutrin help you stop smoking? that's what the dr. recommended for me cause i want to stop smoking. sure, i'm calm but the cravings are too strong.

mommymelissa replied: "Wellbutrin is an anti-depressant that can also help you stop smoking by reducing the withdrawl effects... The fewer (and less severe) withdrawl symptoms you have, the easier it is to quit and stay comitted."

hichefheidi replied: "I've tried it all. Zyban works by taking it for a couple of weeks, and then quitting. When I took it, For those two weeks before I quit, the drugs gave me dry mouth and made the cigarettes taste TERRIBLE, so it wasn't satisfying, so why smoke. I also had sleeplessness, loss of appetite, and sexual dysfunction. Since I love to eat, sleep, and f**k, I want off it after quitting for one month. I staretd smoking again. I've also tried the gum, the patch, and cold-turkey. I finally quit smoking on Jan 14, cold-turkey, and never looked back. When you quit as many times as I have, you just run out of reasons to start smoking again...you're fully aware that no matter what you do, it's going to suck, you'll have cravings, etc...so you just suck it up and do it. I figure if it took me a year to become a full-fledged smoker, it's going to take me that long to unlearn being a smoker. When you are ready, you will quit, and nothing and no one will do it for you, or lessen the pains of quitting. But, the rewards will be in your health, and control over your life again. It's been over three monthe for me, and believe me, I think about smoking ALOT less now, than I did as a smoker! Good luck, and hang in there...you'll get it!"

Nascar 06 replied: "Wellbutrin is also used to treat people with mental disorders. It helps to relax your nerves during the withdrawal symptoms but has little to no effect on your cravings."

varekai replied: "This method works for me and is the only money back guaranteed. I quite smoking 2 years ago Get the Facts Easyway, founded by Allen Carr in 1983, has the highest independently verified 12-month success rate (75.8% for a smoker completing the program) of any quit smoking technique and a 90% satisfaction rating. Compare Easyway to other methods and see for yourself why Easyway is called “The Cadillac of quit smoking methods.” The Allen Carr Method HOW THE METHOD WORKS Using psychotherapy, the method works in the opposite way to the “willpower” method. It does not concentrate on the reasons the smoker should not smoke : the money, the slavery, the health risks and the stigma. Smokers know all that already. Instead it focuses on why smokers continue to smoke in spite of the obvious disadvantages. It is fear that keeps smokers hooked! Fear the smoker will have to give up their pleasure or crutch. Fear the smoker will be unable to enjoy life or handle stress. Fear the smoker will have to go through an awful trauma to get free. Fear the smoker will never get completely free from the craving. The Method removes these fears Smokers quit with the Allen Carr Method as happy non-smokers, not feeling deprived but with a huge sense of relief and elation that they have finally achieved what they always wanted…. TO BE FREE! What about the terrible withdrawal pangs from nicotine? The physical withdrawal from nicotine is so slight that most smokers don’t realise that they are addicts. What smokers suffer when they try and quit using other methods is the misery and depression caused by the belief that they are being deprived of a pleasure or a crutch. The Allen Carr Method removes this feeling of deprivation. It removes the need and desire to smoke. Once the smoker is in the right frame of mind and they follow the simple instructions, the physical withdrawal from nicotine is hardly noticeable. No Gimmicks! The Method does not use any gimmicks, useless aids or substitutes. No nicotine gum, patches, lozenges, tabs, inhilators or nasal sprays! No needles! No lasers! No drugs! No herbs! No shock treatment! The Allen Carr Method is successful because: It removes the smokers’ conflict of will. There are no bad withdrawal pangs. It is instantaneous and easy. It is equally effective for long-term heavy smokers and light smokers. You need not gain weight. You will not miss smoking. Medical Endorsements A personal view from Professor Judith Mackay MBE, JP, FRCO (Edin), FRCP (Lon), World Health Organisation Advisory Panel on Tobacco and Health “I have no hesitation in supporting Allen Carr’s work. Many clinics use some of his techniques but it would appear that few do it in quite such a successful package.” Carole Johnson, Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Unit, Tyne Tees “his success rate was such that, when budgets allow, we continue to use Easyway for work with specific groups and individuals.” Dr Anil Visa BSc, MBBch., FRCA, Consultant – Royal Hospitals NHS Trust – Royal London Hospital “I have observed the Allen Carr method at first hand and have found it to be very successful and I wholeheartedly support it as an effective way to quit smoking.” Dr William Green, Head of Psychiatric Dept, Matilda Hospital, Hong Kong “It is a remarkable fact that Allen Carr, on his own admission a non-professional in behaviour modification, should have succeeded where countless psychologists and psychiatrists holding postgraduate qualifications have failed, in formulating a simple and effective way to stop smoking.” Dr Martin Jarvis, Principle Scientist, Imperial Cancer Research Fund and Reader in Health Psychology, University College London ”...I am more than happy to testify to Allen Carr’s enduring involvement and to recognise the value of the kind of behavioural and cognitive support he provides.” Dr PM Bray MB CH.b., MRCGP “I was really impressed by the method. In spite of the Allen Carr organisation’s success and fame, there were no gimmicks and the professional approach was something a GP could readily respect. I would be happy to give a medical endorsement of the method to anyone.” Celebrity Endorsements "His method is absolutely unique, removing the dependence on cigarettes, while you are actually smoking. I’m pleased to say it has worked for many of my friends and staff.” Sir Richard Branson “Some friends of mine who had stopped using Allen Carr’s method suggested I tried it. I did. It was such a revelation that instantly I was freed from my addiction. Like those friends of mine, I found it not only easy but unbelievably enjoyable to stay stopped.” Sir Anthony Hopkins GOOD LUCK!"

Does Wellbutrin really help stop smoking? My doctor prescribed me wellbutrin to quit smoking. Has anyone taken this while pregnant? It is 150mg is that safe while pregnant? Just want to talk to others that have taken it or know a sight I can go to to find out more info. Thank you.

chika replied: "anything that you believe will help...helps"

abbasgirlie replied: "If you have to, then do so. It's not the best thing for the baby, but niether is smoking, so I guess you kinda just trade one for the other. I've had a few friends use it. It helped them through prenancy and post-partum, but had depression. So do what you feel is right. It's your body so you willknow."

melashell replied: "If your doctor perscribed it then it's safe to take. I've known people that were on it to quit smoking, some it worked for and other it didn't. But, it is used very commonly to help people quit smoking."

Ryan's mom replied: "If he knew that you were pregnant and it wasn't safe he would not have prescibed it. Actually this is an anti-depressant, and most are considered safe during pregnancy (I am on Zoloft for PPDand my OB said I could continue it when I got pregnant again), but when used to help quit smoking it is called Zyban...my husband took it, and when he took it as prescribed it did help him quit."

Sara Lee 23 replied: "My doc prescribed it to me once for that but it didn't work...maybe I didn't use enough will power, though. everyone reacts differently to it."

KISSAHOG replied: "YES, IT IS INDICTED AS ONE OF ITS USES"

firecracker replied: "It reacts different for everyone. I went on it when I thought I was depressed. It did nothing for my depression, but I didn't feel like smoking much anymore, and I was up all night thinking about it. It made me have insomnia. I have heard of women taking it in they're pregnancies. If it helps, then great."

Crissy M replied: "It will help but i don't think you can take it while your pregnant !! i think you have to just quit slowly , i am trying and this sucks big time. oh by the way glad to hear all is well , congratulations !!!"

Wellbutrin to stop smoking? i have smoked for awhile and i reealllllyyy want to stop i have tryed 3x in the last month and couldn't for more then a day before the shaking, chest pain and the edginess took over and i started again my dr put me on chantix and that messed me up bad throwing up dizziness messed up dreams ect.. he wants to put me on wellbutrin idk what it is...Is this a good med to help me break the habit? if not what can help? appreciate all help i can get

jenius replied: "Yes it is a good med it worked for me. It is used as an anti-depressant as well. Unfortunately a lot of insurance companies will only cover it if it used as an anti-depressant. Best of Luck."

Nick replied: "If you are a heavy smoker, you will likely experience withdrawal symptoms, which begin within hours of smoking the last cigarette. These may include irritability, impatience, hostility, anxiety, depression, insomnia, restlessness, increased appetite, and a craving for cigarettes. Perhaps your doctor can prescribe medication that will help ease these symptoms. In addition, there are things you can do to help you win the battle. During the first few difficult weeks, eat low-calorie foods, and drink plenty of water. Some have found it helpful to snack on raw vegetables, such as carrots or celery. If you exercise, you will help offset weight gain and soothe jittery nerves. Avoid places and situations where you will be tempted to smoke. Fight against bad reasoning that may tempt you to smoke. Here are some common thoughts during withdrawal: 'I'll smoke just today to get me through this tough time.' 'Smoking is my only vice!' 'Tobacco can't be all that bad; some heavy smokers live to be over 90.' 'I've got to die of something.' 'Life is no fun without tobacco.' If you are about to give in, delay. By waiting just ten minutes, the acute craving may pass. Sometimes the thought of never smoking again might seem overwhelming. If you feel that way, concentrate on quitting just for today. If you want to serve God, pray for help. Our loving Creator can provide "help at the right time" for those who are striving to bring their lives into harmony with his will. (Hebrews 4:16) But don't expect a miracle. You must act in harmony with your prayers."

Wellbutrin/Zyban... to stop smoking.? I'm not asking for myself. I used Zyban four years ago to stop smoking. The doctor suggested my husband use Wellbutrin instead of Zyban. I have it that the two are the same thing, so why tell him Wellbutrin is better? Also, he only has to take one tablet per day for the next three months. When I was on Zyban I had to take two tablets a day for three months. Will it still work on such a low dosage (it's the same per tablet as the Zyban)? Since my sister's now on Zyban to stop smoking, she also has to take two tablets a day, we're thinking either the pharmacist or the doctor made a mistake with the script.

shekittee replied: "He probably suggested wellbutrin for insurance purposes. It usually don't cover the zyban. As far as the 2 being the same drug they are, but are they the same dose(milligram). I too toke Zyban to quit smoking and took 1 tablet initially for several days then started the 2 a day. If the Wellbutrin is the same milligram as the wellbutrin, I would suggest you call the Dr. and double check, the dose, and explain you took 2 tablets , and it worked for you."

My doctor recently put me on wellbutrin xl to stop smoking.? I forgot how many weeks he said to take the 150 mg. before starting on the 300mg. Anyone know so i don't have to bother him.......again.

MsSmurfy replied: "I am familiar with the drug as well as many ways it is used....have also taken the drug...However, nobody but your doctor or Pharmacist who filled the original Rx should advise you on how you should take the medication...CALL your doctor...it won't be a bother, you will more than likely get instructions from the nurse who will confirm what either he himself states OR what is written on your chart...Call...safer to do that anyway! Take care~"
