What side effects have you had from allegra? I have recently started to take allegra and it seems to be effecting my mood. I was wondering if anyone else has seen a similar issue.

alamahara replied: "I never had any side effects from Allegra but that is probably because I didn't take it very long. Believe it or not it never relieved any of my symptoms. Clariton doesn't work for me either. I end up suffering through the drowsiness of Benydryl because its the only thing that works for me!"

eHealthMe replied: "try to search allegra side effects other people had. you can enter your own side effects to compare with others'. at this moment, there are 6,000 side effects and drug interactions reported related to allegra."

How long does it take for Allegra to take effect? I started taking allegra today and I wanted to know how long it takes for it to start working?

loulu2u replied: "It should start working a soon as it's digested. If your doctor recommended that you take it every day, you'll probably get a bigger effect after it's been in your system a few days, but just having some in your body should be helpful. Note: don't take allegra with antacids. I don't think it works as well, ...or it might be dangerous. I've forgotten which. Check with your doctor. I used to get horrible hay fever in the spring. I take Allegra from time to time, but I take Nasonex every day in the spring. It's very helpful."

swf36D replied: "You should feel at least a little relief by now, however it can vary on what kind of symptoms you are having and whether you are taking Allegra, or Allegra D and if it is the 24 hour version or the 12 hour version. After a week, you should really feel relief. I that the 24 hour Allegra D. I find first of all, that I don't get a full 24 hour of relief and usually wake up around 3AM stuffed up, so you may want to adjust when you take it to give you relief when you need it most. when I take it in the morning, usually after a hour or two, the pill kicks in and I'm good for the rest of the day. Everyone is different though, so talk to your doctor. Not every medicine works for every person. I had been taking Singulair and although I worked great for my nasal and breathing symptoms, it gave me hives and I had to stop taking it. Good luck!"

B B 1883 replied: "Hi. I think Loulu2u said it well. Here is some more information: . Fexofenadine (Allegra) is in a class of medications called antihistamines. It works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergy symptoms. Whats great about it is that it is NON SEDATING - Claritin can make you drowsy at higher doses and Zyrtec's regular dosing can have sedating effects. There are several versions of Allergra including those with Pseudophedrine (Allegra D), orally disintegrating tablets, and various dosaging (180mg, 120mg, & 60mg) options. I have such severe allergies (year round - but Trees/Grasses/Molds are my worst) that I take the 180 mg dose twice a day. I have had no adverse side effects. At times, I take a decongestant (pseudophedrine) along with the fexofenadine to help with the extra stuffies of the bad reactions. I did some research to help figure the answer to your question. I found your answer and a bit more. Maybe the info here is too much - but atleast I learned a bit. Drugs dot com says that fexofenadine (the generic version of Allegra) is rapidly absorbed in a mean average of 2.6 hours. So, if you have been taking Allegra for a few days now, you should have a good level built up in your blood stream. If you are not finding relief, you should contact your doctor. The dosaging may not be enough, you might be taking a conflicting medication which limits the abilites of Allegra to work, you might need additional help to get over the rought times. Here are a few suggestions about taking Allegra/Fexofenadine: * Take with water, not juice (see study below) * Take around the same time every day. * If you take an antacid, take the antacid several hours before or after you take the Allegra. * Do not eat with a high fat meal, it reduces plasma levels by 20% (drugs.com) PS - I just found this out - that if you are thinking about becoming pregnant, you might want to check with your doctor. Allegra is a Class C drug - which means it might cause harm to the baby or be passed along in breast milk. hmmm...yet its safe enough for a 2 year old with hives."

How much is Allegra going to cost me? I just went to the doctor for allergy problems and he wrote me a prescription for Allegra. Problem is, my insurance doesn't cover prescriptions. How much does a 30-pill supply cost without insurance?

skg8806 replied: "I think when I used to get it, it was around $100 dollars, but I think that was more than a 30 day supply."

Sara S replied: "Allegra is unreasonably expensive!!! I believe there is a generic brand for it, though. Ask your doctor to change it to generic. Otherwise, many insurance companies will have a partner that will mail your prescription to you at a discounted rate even if prescriptions are not covered in your plan! Also, there are very reputable out-of-country pharmacies that will mail your prescription to you- be careful on that, though, and do your homework!"

versantly replied: "contact pharmacies for pricing or ask your doctor to write an Rx covered by your insurance."

Lacey 66 replied: "I would just call around to some local pharmacies and ask for the price. If the Rx was written for plain Allegra, there is a generic for it called Fexofenadine. (Just so you know, the pharmacy can give you the generic without the Rx being changed, you do NOT have to get another Rx written for a generic). If the Rx was written for Allegra D, there is no generic yet and it is quite expensive. But for a 30 day supply for Fexofenadine, I would expect it to be under $80. Try Walmart or Target, they tend to be less expensive than Walgreens or CVS for people without Prescription insurance."

Love Baseball replied: "you really need to shop around, check walmart, supermarkets and drugstores because the prices can be very different. I even buy some of my meds online when my insurance company tells me they wont cover them. here is the link to Allegra at the online site I use for some of my meds as yet another alternative place to shop"

Can Zyrtec, Allegra or Nasonex cause high blood pressure? I have been having some pretty serious allergies this summer and fall, that have led to ear infections and blockages. My blood pressure has always been normal, but the last few weeks it is very high, 160/110 to 150/91 range. The only big change in me is that I have been taking Zyrtec and Nasonex, and that was changed last week when they noticed the bp problem to Allegra and Nasonex. I just don't feel right. Have a followup with the doc this Friday, and we will do a more thourough workup to see what is going on. I stopped taking the drugs because of the BP thing just today, and the pressure in my ear is painful again. Anybody had a connection between these types of meds and high blood pressure resulting from their use?

gwenduhart replied: "I sincerely hope that someone answers this question as well. I have been using Nasonex for about two weeks, and I noticed that my blood pressure was elevated within the same measurements. I'm afraid to continue using it."

Leo C replied: "I have been using csteriods for allergies for a long time. My blood pressure was always normal up until 12-18 months ago when it started to creep up. I changed my roid brand about the same time (trying several different ones) and have recently been using the Nasonex. A trip to the dentist revealed similar numbers to you. I am not certain it is the nasonex but my recent queries lead me to believe I should take some action. I am going to suffer through pulling the plug on all roids for a while to see what happens. I may go back to the more expensive becaonase or vansenase (Dont recall having pressure problems with them) and see how it goes."

What´s the difference between Allegra D Pills and the normal Allegra? I have to buy the Allegra D, but i don´t know if it heals the skin rach by food poisoning too.

oafgirl replied: "D stands for decongestant, like if you have a stopped up nose, usually pseudophed or something similar"

Andrea replied: "Allegra D contains a decongestant in addition to the antihistamine. The decongestant wouldn't make a difference in a rash, only in your nose/sinuses. It is the antihistamine that should be helping your rash and that is the same dose in both the regular Allegra and the Allegra D."

Safe to use claritin and allegra in same day? I took a 24-hour Claritin this morning and it did not help my symptoms. I have a sinus infection caused by allergies. The doctor recommended I start taking Allegra-D instead. Should I wait until tomorrow morning to take the Allegra-D or is alright? I feel miserable and really need something to clear me up.

ontopofoldsmokie replied: "Neither of those are heavy duty antihistamines. It would be ok to take the Allegra-D. I will tell you that the decongestant in Allegra-D may make it difficult to sleep if you take it tonight."

aneurodoc125 replied: "Perhaps you need something to loosen the mucus. Antihistamines have a tendency to dry you out and make secretions thicker and harder to get rid of. Robitussin plain is good, and there are tablet forms of guiafenesin."

Is it safe to take Benedryl and Allegra in the same day? Obviously I have allergy issues. I have been taking allegra at 180 mg's but some days it just doesnt get it done. Eyes are watery and itchy beyond belief some days. I dont want to get shots unless I have too as they are costly.

K M replied: "ask the pharmacist. i've done it with no probs but you should check anyway."

Mel replied: "Both are an antihistime, so both should not be used at the same time. Take your allegra every day, but perhaps see your doctor about some eye drops. I think there's a brand called ocuhist that is specific to allergy eyes. It really works. I cannot recall if that's a prescription medicine or not, but the pharmacist can let you know. There are really sweet prescription eye drops out there, and your eye doctor or regular doctor can write them up for you, no problem. Also, there are different allergy medicines out there. I do not know how long you've been on allegra, but you might have built up an immunity. You might want to try zrytec or alavert if you have more problems that just your eyes. Anyway, the eye drops should work for you. You may want to keep an eye on the weather channel and the pollen, ragweed, and grass factor. These things vary with the weather and they will let you know on days if there is a moderate or severe level for these. If it's a high number for pollen or ragweed, you may want to limit your outdoors time, if you are unable to get extra medicine. Good luck!"

Can i take my Allegra medicine the morning of my fasting lab? I take Allegra every morning for chronic hives, if i don't take it when i wake up i will get hives within like 30 minutes... and i have a fasting test tomorrow. Do you know if i can take my medicine with water in the morning?

sokokl replied: "Depending on the particular tests you are having done it is probably ok, but I would recommend checking with your doctor as well as the lab you are getting the test done (if the test is being done outside of the clinic)."

Is it OK to give my dog allegra for seasnal allergies? my lab has seasonal allegies... reactin is not working and a good friend of mine suggested allegra... would it be OK to use on my dog? She's under 70 pounds like 68 so would a pediatric douce of 60 MG be OK?

jessy replied: "no, never give human drugs to your pets. Call the vet. They will give you a suggestive medication."

judi f replied: "Contact your vet for an alternative med. Alot of vets will recommend Benadryl for Chlortromaton 4mg for seasonal allergies. Don't just medicate your dog on your own."

Here and There replied: "NO NO NO! Dogs usually show allergies through skin irritaions, not through their sinus'....you need to speak with a vet before giving your dog anything like that."

Marcie replied: "Call the vet. I would NEVER give my dog medicine based on a friend's advise.. .MUCH LESS strangers on the internet. Your vet will most likely answer the question through the assistant on the phone and you won't have to pay for a visit."

ⓜⓔⓖⓐⓝ *adopt from a shelter* replied: "NO NO NO NO NO. People medicine should NEVER be given to dogs without a vet's permission."

what is the difference between allegra d and zyrtec d? I am currently on allegra d and it isn't working! My prescription plan will only cover zyrtec d or allegra d. Just wondering what the difference is and if zyrtec d will work for me or if it is the same as allegra d?

SmartySlacks replied: "zyrtec has a cooler mascot..."

Mad Roy replied: "allegra d = 60 mg foxfenadine (antihistamine) plus 120 mg pseudoephedrine (decongestant) zyrtec d = 5 mg cetirazine (antihistamine) plus 120 mg pseudoephedrine (decongestant) Some people get better results with a different antihistamine so it would be worth a trial. Try taking vitamin C 500 mg and pantothenic acid 500 mg daily for allergy relief. it helps some folks. Good luck."

zenithkid replied: "Previous answer from pharmacist is correct. Both contain pseudoephedrine, a decongestant that relieves stuffy noses by draining nasal passages. But they each contain a different anti histamine. Both are combination products, an anti histamine with a decongestant. Hence the brand names X-D....Y-D. D for Decongestant. Some people have better results with one anti histamine, others do better on others. Use the combination product only if you have nasal congestion, otherwise, the single ingredient products Zyrtec and Allegra are all you need."
