Does anyone know of any negative effects from Prozac during pregnancy? I am 6 1/2 months pregnant and have an 11 month old at home and I am going through postpardum depression and dealing with the hormones of pregnancy at the same time. The doctor gave me Prozac and told me it was safe but the pharmacist told me it was not safe. Has anyone heard of negative effects on unborn baby from Prozac and does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this another way?

silverbirch replied: "Please, don't go for a second opinion on here. Get the professionals involved again."

Megan11034 replied: "get a second oppinion from a DOCTOR. not complete strangers who will just mess with your head"

♥Gatekeeper♥ replied: "If you are taking Prozac during the third trimester until the time of delivery, your baby may experience some complications for the first few days of life requiring extra care. Symptoms of withdrawal such as problems breathing, jitteriness, increased muscle tone, irritability, altered sleep patterns, tremors and difficulty eating may occur. Your baby may need to stay in a special care nursery for several days until the withdrawal symptoms go away. While these problems occur at all doses of Prozac, they may occur more often with higher doses of Prozac. For alternatives go to: DoctorYourself.com - Prozac Alternatives"

Margaret W replied: "It is my understanding that Prozac has been studied quite a bit, (actually the only anti-depressant studied for use during pregnancy, so there's no definitive proof that it is the BEST one to use). I took it during my first pregnancy for depression, and there are no apparent effects on my firstborn. However, I did make the decision to risk my emotional well-being during my second pregnancy, just on the outside chance that there could be some detrimental effects to my child. My first son weighed only 6 lbs. 7 oz. at birth and did not cry immediately after birth. His shallow breathing also caused some concern at the beginning, and was a little scary for a second. My second son (no Prozac) weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz. at birth. Could be related - maybe not. There's no way to know for sure. I DON'T RECOMMEND THAT ANY WOMAN DECIDE TO DISCONTINUE TAKING ANTI-DEPRESSANTS ON HER OWN...PLEASE CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE MAKING A DECISION LIKE THIS. IF YOU'RE SEVERELY DEPRESSED, THIS COULD BE DANGEROUS TO YOU, YOUR UNBORN BABY, AND YOUR CHILD. Anyway, there is a wealth of information on the internet about Prozac studies during pregnancy, and in the end, only you and your doctor can decide what's best for you and your babies. God bless."

Amanda M replied: "I was on only 2 mg of PAXIL per day and my doctor ordered me to stop immediately and gave me a printout on the dangers of certain anti-depressant drugs on pregnancy. From what I read, prolonged use of these while pregnant can cause heart and lung defects! Please seek a second opinion from an actual OB-GYN or women's health professional who may be more tuned in to the effects of these drugs on pregnant individuals! Good Luck and I pray you will start feeling better on your own! Depression in any form is a tough thing!"

Lea replied: "Prozac is a pregnancy category C drug. That is pretty much the default category. That means no major studies have been completed. The few completed studies say that the baby will not have any ill effects if mother is on it during the second or first trimester. For third trimester babies with mother's on prozac, it appears, there is a slightly higher incidence of adverse effects, but it is within normal limits. However, there are conflicting studies on this. This drug does not cause birth defects Standard recommendations is that pregnant women should stay with A and B category drugs, but it cases of severe need category C drugs can be used. Category D and X should never be used."

I have been prescribed prozac durin my pregnancy as a replacement fr xanax and it dont work for me.? The prozac (fluoxetine) makes me feel terrible and doesnt help my anxiety at all. The side effects are alot worse is there another option? And is the xanax any more dangerous than the prozac during pregnancy? The prozac is deffinately not the answer for me, I am not depressed, I have severe anxiety disorder!

Nathan replied: "Not really. Unfortunately xanax is really bad for the child. You may have to suck it up for the next 9 months."

Pangolin replied: "You need to be discussing this with your obstetrician. Xanax is pregnancy category D, which means there is clear evidence of harmful effects to the fetus. Please do not take it."

Pregnancy and fluoxetine/prozac...? Hi, me and my partner have decided to try for our second baby but I am on fluoxetine, does anyone have any experience in this or does anyone know of any bad effects on pregnancy? Thanks in advance.

Rachel replied: "i was coming off it when i got pregnant and came off it all together by the time i found out at 6weeks. see ur doctor its not good for the baby and in my experience it was not doing me much good, i just thought it was"

bug replied: "There is no medical evidence to suggest that fluoxetine is harmful to a unborn baby during pregnancy, it does not have any adverse outcome to the baby when born, fluoxetine does not affect breastmilk. I took it before I was pregnannt both times, during my pregnancies and after, my kids are fine. Student Midwife"

Mrs Stones 2 B Baby due 26/12/09 replied: "hiya hun, i was told to come off mine a few months before trying and that i cud start taking it again at 14 weeks if i needed it, everyone is diff so speak to your dr before hand they may want to just lower your dose, they go on a baby takes 12 weeks to form so you shud avoid meds in that time, after that dna is set so you can take stuff in moderation thing, thats what i was told off my dr anyways"

cjsmummy replied: "i was given prozac in pregnancy - its considered the safest to give.however, you really should see a doctor to discuss with them the pros and cons - maybe your dose could be lowered.whatever you do, dont stop taking it - this is dangerous."

Taking Prozac during last month of pregnancy...any people with experience? I've been trying to go off. Every Dr. I have talked with has suggested against it. I called Mother Risk a couple times and they say there are very few concerns, that they suggest staying on. But I'm scared of the effects on the baby. There are some risks of feeding and respiratory problems for the first 48 hours. Anyone with experience with this and how was the baby?

*Twiztid Ninjette* replied: "I don't have experience with it,but I'm on the same thing. The dr (my psychitrist told me he's been prescribing it to pregnant women for a long time, and he's yet to see any of the bad things that they say can come with it. Good luck, and I don't think it will cause a problem!"

xoxloveletter323 replied: "Well my doctor is weaning me off my bipolar medicen right now...I'm pregnant and I'm on Lamictal..the doctor said that their are not alot of concerns with lamictal he sees people having healthy pregnancys...but their are some risks that the baby could have a cleft lip. So I'm getting off it! and it sucks! if my moods get really bad he's going to keep me on a small dose."

Can I take prozac while I am pregnant? I am planning a pregnancy and need to know the medications that I can and can't take. Is there a web site that has good information of this type that you can point me to? Also, I did some research on the prozac question and found that you apparently can take it, but its effect on the fetus is unclear, so you should weigh whether or not to take it based on the risk and how much you need to take it. Btw, I take a very low dose. Thanks

Due August 26th w/ #2 replied: "You need to consult your doctor about this and any medications you want to take while trying and possibly being pregnant. What you read is true about Prozac so this is why you want to weigh your options with your doctor."

DUE MAY 16TH:) replied: "your best bet it to talk to your doctor"

Getoya replied: "no! you can't take anything but prenatal pills and chldren's motrin , because if anything else then you are puting u and ur baby at risk so you should think twice ... and i am only telling you because i asked the same question when i found out i was pregnant and my doctor told me this very thing that i am telling you so stop being so inconsiderate ... how logical does it sound u taking prozac and u are trying to get pregnant or u already are?!!! use a little bit of common sense ... that's like taking viagra and you are pregnant?"

Is there a risk to the baby in stopping Prozac during the second trimester? I am 22 weeks pregnant and have stopped taking it. none of my dr.'s were able to see me and the thought of harming my baby freaked me out. I do not feel any less stable. I am not severely depressed. I kknow what effects depression can have on the baby. I think under my circumstances the greater risk is with taking the medication. Anyway, Was it dangerous for the baby to have stopped taking the medication? I read it can lead to losing the pregnancy...but you can't believe everything you read.

MSS replied: "It depend on person to person. Since you are pregnant and you don't want to give any risks to the baby, it is better to ask you doctor."

what could be the reasons that one can miss her period aside from pregnancy? My wife is breastfeeding my 4-month-old son and her period is late. Lately, she is been taking Gravol to help her fall asleep. My wife is breastfeeding my 4-month-old son and her period is late. Lately, she is been taking Gravol to help her fall asleep. We actually used two home tests and both results came back negative. Also, what worries me is that I think she getting addicted to Gravol. It's much appreciated if you could give me any info. you have about Gravol and its side effects. She is only 24 and very very healthy and I don't want her to go on heavy sleeping pills which their chemicals usually and actually always make you addicted and cause mental health difficulties. The fact of the matter is that I don't trust her family doctor, because during her pregnancy once she opened up and dicussed her problem with her doctor but instead she recommended I give her prozac which can cause serious anxiety problems and can ruin your life for good.

blondie replied: "My advice would be to consult another Dr. Maybe she has gotten too used to those pills and isn't eating right, or she could just be overloaded with stress."

Ana L replied: "Having a very low percent body fat can make you skip your period and stress can even do it too. Sometimes women miss their periods just out of chance... it happens to all women sometimes. I would say if you've taken two tests then she's probably not pregnant."

Mrs. Boots (Lara) replied: "A high stress level can cause a woman to miss her period. I had never missed a period until I miscarried in 2001. Earlier this year, I skipped a period. Never done that before other than when I miscarried. I was under a lot of stress when I skipped the period. Go to the source link I provided, it gives other reasons why a woman would skip her period."

7kb13 replied: "1st, I don't know anything about Gravol, so I can't help you there. 2nd- Your wife probably hasn't gotten her period due to the fact that she is breast feeding. Breast feeding acts as a type of birth control. In other words, it is a defense mechanism in the woman's body to help prevent her from getting pregnant while she is nursing a baby. Not in all cases though. When I was pregnant, I breast fed for 5 months and did not have my period the whole time. It took another 1 1/2 months after I stopped to actually start again. I wouldn't worry too much about her not having her period while she is breast feeding. If you think that she is getting addicted to Gravol, I would definitely try and get her back in to see her doctor. Good Luck."

birdbeach19 replied: "ovarian cists (small tumor) is very common among women who are pregnant or just had children. My mom had one when she had me. Not a huge deal, they just take it out and that's that, but if you leave it for long enough it can spread. And a second thing: she should not be taking ANY medicines unless prescribed. Anything she takes, goes into the baby since she is breast feeding. Just keep that in mind."

Fizzle replied: "A woman who is breastfeeding will normally not ovulate (have a period) until she stops breastfeeding. My wife gave birth, breastfed, and didn't have a period for several months. That's normal."

Susie-Q replied: "She needs to talk to her Doctor"

lmead06 replied: "Stress is a major factor in missing your period aside from being pregnant, which it doesn't seem like your wife is. As to the Gravol, I strongly suggest that you prevent her from taking it, just for a little while. It will definitely be a problem the first couple of nights becuase she's been taking it for so long. But after a week or maybe even less, she should feel just fine and will be able to sleep well. The site below should help you. It looks like there is no bad side effects to it. Check it out! And I hope this helps!"

<3 New Sexy Momma replied: "Well from what I know your not supposed to be having your period while you breastfeed but you can still get pregnant.Im a new mom only 20 yrs. old and Im breastfeeding too and I dont have my period. If she's on Depo she wouldnt have her period either,When I was on depo for a year I didnt have my period for that whole time.At first I did then it stopped(my period). And since she had a baby her period couldve changed to irregular periods.Well I hope this helped.Bye <3 New Momma Katy"

mac replied: "Hormonal imbalances can cause her period to be irregular- but it most likely irregular because she is still nursing. Im concerned that she is on a sleeping pill and nursing a 4 month old. Does your sons pediatrician know your wife is on that medication? Check with your sons doctor regarding any medication your wife is on while she is breastfeeding. As far as the side effects of Gravol- just google the med and it will tell you all the side effects. good luck to your family."

quadmum replied: "it is quite normal for a breastfeeding mum not to resume her period cycle for some time. some women including myseld dont get it back again until stopping breast feeding."

beerbohms replied: "Normally women who are breastfeeding don't get a period until they stop nursing/have no more milk coming in."

AshletD replied: "You should definitely make sure she's not getting addicted to sleeping pills...make her have a talk with her doctor. As for Prozac, I've taken it for 10 years. It helps with my anxiety and hasn't ruined my whole life. I wish people were a little more educated about anti-depressants. If her doctor suggested she take something like that, I'm sure there must have been a good reason."

curious#1 replied: "Does your wife know that the baby is getting the sleeping pill too, when she breast feeds? Some times after having a baby your periods can become irregular. Mine were irregular until my first child was born, and then they were regular after my second child was born they went back to irregular"

Prozac while Breastfeeding? I've been taking 60mg of Prozac daily since my 7th or 8th month of pregnancy. My son is now a month old and I'm breastfeeding him. The info I found, listed below, scares me now that the Prozac may harm my son. Does anyone know how worried I should be about this? Per Dr. Hale, Prozac is the only drug "cleared by the FDA" for use during pregnancy. A mother on Prozac during pregnancy may wish to change drugs before birth or immediately after, or titrate the dose down in the last trimester since the existing blood plasma level in the newborn fetus plus the drug transfer through milk may lead to toxicity. Its effects on the breastfed infant have been reported in infants 2 months old or less.

danaluana replied: "It is not recommended. Prozac has been found to cause withdrawal symptoms in adults. Your infant will also suffer withdrawal symptoms after discontinuing breastfeeding."

proud single mom replied: "I heard it is ok to take during pregnancy... but I also heard that the baby can go through withdrawl... But if I heard that, I would be scared and go off"

Elysia replied: "Ask a medical professional. Your doctor feels the need for you to be on Prozac. It might harm YOU if you abruptly stop taking it out of fear of hurting your baby. There may be a more breast-feeding-friendly SSRI out there for you to take. I have read that Prozac does seem to be secreted into breast milk more readily than some other SSRI's out there. Continue to take your Prozac until you meet with your doctor and then follow doctor's instructions to the "T" . Discontinuing SSRI's abruptly leads to negative consequences for the individual taking them. You may experience suicidal ideation or very poor mood."

mom4life_83 replied: "No my doctor took me off till i was not breast feeding and i had to bring paper work from the WIC office a place in Texas that pays for formula. Get off the Prozac and talk to your baby's Doctor now!!!!!"

Santa's Favorite APBT replied: "Talk to your doctor and your child's pediatrician voice your concerns."

momma2mingbu replied: "Hale usually suggests Zoloft as a better choice. You should contact your doctor and discuss changing prescriptions."

baby_savvy replied: "Talk to the doctor who prescribed the prozac. I know there are anti-depressants thtat are safe to take while breastfeeding - ask for a new prescription. DO NOT go off of the prozac without talking to the doctor first - you and the baby will both go through withdrawal."

is it safe to take paxil during pregnancy? I noticed through reading side effects that it cause bleeding? I am 5 weeks preg and have been bleeding red, first brown spots then red. The doctor said it was a threatened miscarriage. Could this be caused by Paxil? I switched from Prozac to Paxil when I found out I was preganant with the advise of my doctor. She said it was a classification B and is the safest antidepressant for preg. I have had two ultrasounds and the last one could see a fetal pole. They said a heartbeat was to early to see.

♥ jEs replied: "If I was preggers I would not even if my doc said it was okay, but if you think you need to please call your doctor and find out."

Gorje R replied: "ask your Dr. they have the answers but last I heard no it's not a good thing it can cause issues"

claudiacake replied: "This is from the FDA: The Food and Drug Administration today is alerting health care professionals and patients about early results of new studies for Paxil (paroxetine) suggesting that the drug increases the risk for birth defects, particularly heart defects, when women take it during the first three months of pregnancy. Paxil is approved for the treatment of depression and several other psychiatric disorders. FDA is currently gathering additional data and waiting for the final results of the recent studies in order to better understand the higher risk for birth defects that has been seen with Paxil. FDA is advising health care professionals to discuss the potential risk of birth defects with patients taking Paxil who plan to become pregnant or are in their first three months of pregnancy. Health care professionals should consider discontinuing Paxil (and switching to another antidepressant if indicated) in these patients. In some patients, the benefits of continuing Paxil may be greater than the potential risk to the fetus. FDA is advising health care professionals not to prescribe Paxil in women who are in the first three months of pregnancy or are planning pregnancy, unless other treatment options are not appropriate. FDA is advising patients that this drug should usually not be taken during pregnancy, but for some women who have already been taking Paxil, the benefits of continuing may be greater than the potential risk to the fetus. Women taking Paxil who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should talk to their physicians about the potential risks of taking the drug during pregnancy. Women taking Paxil should not stop taking it without first talking with their physician. "

Gard23 replied: "Paxil was reclassified by the FDA from a Category C to a Category D. Google on: Paxil pregnancy category - to get more information."
