About Caffeine Stimulants in Q&A
If illegal stimulants cause weight loss, what about high doses of caffeine? I know that drugs like cocaine and methamphetamine, and even legal rx drugs like adderall and ritalin cause weight loss because they are stimulants and suppress appetite. Well, caffeine is a stimulant, and I notice that after a few shots of espresso I am not very hungry. Can high does of caffeine have a weight loss effect? If so, how much must one take?

asking replied: "I drink a fairly large amount of Diet coke daily, it might surpress my appetite...but the side effects i suffer are a pain in the a##..sleepness, jittery, headaches...etc...Certainly, don't take caffeine to lose weight..it speeds your HR, etc...."

DougF replied: "I think you should be very careful thinking that all central nervous system stimulants have the same side effects. This is an extract from the RxList entry on caffeine: "In doses of 100-200 mg. caffeine can increase alertness, relieve drowsiness and improve thinking. At doses of 250-700 mg/day, caffeine can cause anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, hypertension, and insomnia. Caffeine is a diuretic and increases urination. It can curiously enough make it more difficult to lose weight because it stimulates insulin secretion, which reduces serum glucose, which increases hunger." You might also find that the weight loss benefits of CNS like dextro-amphetamine and others is relatively short lived, and does not lead to permanent weight loss. Please, take care."

Kim J replied: "It does have a weight loss effect, because your body burns more calories throughout the day. Use something safe though... caffeine kills your nerves over time. My trainer recommended 8 hour energy (NOT 5 hour), and I've lost around 21 lbs in 2.5 months - that's CRAZY for my bodytype. It's also really cheap"

What stimulates the brain besides caffeine, nicotine, stimulants, endorphins, and anti-depressants? It can be a side effect of another medication. I need help waking up in the morning.

The Dude replied: "The best I have ever lived is also the worst!! Got up before dawn every day and drove to the farm. Had breakfast on the back of the truck on the way to the fields. Worked in backbreaking fashion cutting vegetables out of the ground. When that sun came up, every day, I felt so alive it was rediculous. The exhilaration of the scene, the reality of the pain in my body everything. My real trade is event. I often work day time events when I a very tired after a night time event the day before. Leaving the building and looking at the sky for a few minutes is far more effective than a coffee (not that coffee doesnt help but I try to avoid it). Same goes for working all night - when the dawn comes the tyredness is lifted. Its all about getting that sunlight in your eyes!!!"

DESIREE G replied: "What stimulates the brain, how about sex, best therapy you can get."

d-cup replied: "you might have an iron deficiency"

singer-songwriter gayla replied: "Go to bed early enough that you can get the sleep you need. Then get up early enough to have all the time you need to wake up. Exercise, eat, read something, shower. By the time you need to leave for the day, you'll be awake."

Are there any safe weight loss products I can take? I cannot tolerate caffeine or stimulants.? Just one cup of tea makes my heart act up. I am afraid of most weight loss products, since they contain stimulants. Is there anything that works that will not give me tachycardia or make me very weak? I am also hypothyroid. I take medicine for it, but it has not helped me lose weight. Every time I do a regular exercise program, I gain weight.

jackeraduncan replied: "umm have u heard of the lemonade diet that will help u or evn workin out"

Beth PhD replied: "Most "diet pills" will not be safe for you if you can't tolerate caffeine. Carbohydrate blockers might help reduce calorie absorption. Alli can reduce fat absorption, but I don't recommend that because of the body's need for fat and fat-soluble substances. Chromium supplement might help regulate blood sugar levels. But given your sensitivities, I would recommend just a good, moderately low calorie diet and exercise."

krollamyben replied: "YOu don't need diet pills to lose weight. All you need to do is watch how much you eat and exercise. Something you might look into is try weight wathers. It really help my dad he went from 400 lbs to 300. It did take a year, but he still losing weight. They go off of points for food and all that...they have online weight watchers. So hopefully that's an idea for you."

bluedays replied: "If you already know that any stimulants cause your heart to act up, then the answer to this is NO NO NO! Most weight loss products speed you up which boosts your metabolism, gives you energy and suppresses your appetite. They're not healthy to anyone, including people who don't see instant negative signs like you do. Your best bet is to follow healthy weight loss guidelines as far as food and exercise. As someone who is overweight, I KNOW the temptation to want something to make it easier or help it come off faster, but unfortunately there's nothing but discipline and hard work. You can do it, and good for you for knowing your limits as far as what you can take. A lot of people know it's unhealthy but take these diet pills anyway with tragic results."

Lisa L replied: "take a look at Zylene all natural and no ephedra. I take it and lost about 18 pounds. no jitters feels great!"

isagenixfanatic replied: "Wow. Have you ever heard of products called Isagenix. My mom is 55 years old and she has released over 40 pounds (in 9 weeks) and gone from a size 14 to an 8 with these products. She looks and feels so good. They really work and are so good for you. And they have no caffeine or stimulants in them. I am drinking the shakes for the whey protein as I am 5 months pregnant and they taste so good. What is they could help you like they have helped her. Good luck."

Ximena M replied: "Lets put it straight. Losing weight is not that hard, You will never hear me say that it is. All it takes is dedication, motivation and hard workAlways check in gradients of everything you are buyingRelaxation, stress and strain never allow people to be slim."

How bad is too much caffeine, ginseng, etc stimulants, no sleep, sweet-n-low, if you are pregnant? Would that make the baby retarded, crazy, kill it? Obviously, the person wasn't aware of their condition! Thanks.

CC replied: "Moderation and balance are the two keys to a healthy life."

Mariah W replied: "they say no more than 300mg of caffeine...which equals no more than 2 cups of coffee or 2-3 cups dark tea..not sure about ginseng or sweet-n-low "

V B replied: "Unfortunately, people do much worse things to their bodies before and during their pregnancy. Sweet n low is a chemical sweetener, not a stimulant - so no problem. Caffeine although not recommended, most women in the 60's and 70's smoked and drank coffee and most of us are fine. I would not recommend it after you find out you are preggers. It is best to moderate intake of all stimulants after you realize you are pregnant. And have frequent visits with OB/GYN to ask all of these very basic questions."

Koppula Y replied: "ihihi"

What other legal stimulants are there apart from caffeine? Preferably non addictive, so excluding nicotine. I'm open to herbal alternatives if they work quickly. I need it to get me up in the morning.

quickeningwind replied: "Check this out..."

dan_train0101 replied: "Depends on where your at. I prefer cocaine."

STEPHEN H replied: "sex creates adrenalin, which gives yo the 'feelgood' factor. give it a go and you will see what I mean"

nvrrong replied: "sugar"

vietlao916 replied: "when I was in 6th grade, our class were very sleeping in the morning. Our teacher would say.."yall needa take some Cherrytol" and a kid asked if that's real, and she said she takes it everymorning..no idea what it is though. An E pill will wake you up in the morning, but I wouldnt suggest you taking that. Sex?"

taffscott1 replied: "Kava Kava. Use very carefully and with extreme moderation."

jen replied: "Turn on more lights in the morning, and a few minutes of vigorous exercise will get your heart pumping !"

female_poste replied: "Apples or apple juice are the best wake-uppers. I work 24/7, so if this doesn't work, i don't know how else i'm getting the energy to keep awake. it's healthy, it's safe, and, unlike coffee, it won't cause you palpitations and bad breath. Good for the excretory system, too! :P - learned this from a friend while we were doing a term paper in high school"

Denise S replied: "If you need help getting up in the morning, instead of looking for a stimulant, you should try resetting your natural body clock. Go to bed earlier, practice some relaxation techniques before you go to bed.. in the morning try some exercise and music."

Scarlet_Begonias replied: "NoDoze"

Val J replied: "ginsene works for me"

Tricia3 replied: "Eat an apple 1st thing in the morning, works better than any kind of so called stimulant, plus it's healthy for you too!"

mayor r replied: "antioxidants!!!!!!!!!"

newkirkb52 replied: "We have many herbal plants here in the Philippines that help keep you alert and awaken in the morning . These are but a few . Sambong Leaves - great for healthy heart too . Lagundi leaves i Brain and alertness. Check out the web site Akita products.com"

POLL - can you survive without stimulants like caffeine? I cant. I need my red bull shots. I need two a day. What stimulants do you take if you take any and how much?

Codename replied: "yeah but i get really sad and quite"

Naomi replied: "sure I can. I don't take stimulants at all."

Army Dude replied: "Hell to the no. The Army lives, breathes, bleeds, and absolutely RUNS on coffee. All day every day. Hope this answers your question. LOL!!!"

Moomoes replied: "nope. I'm good without"

Ms. Cher replied: "<~~caffeine free....prefers other stimulants"

squeaky replied: "i do not believe that we need stimulants to survive like we need food and water many people are addicted to certain things caffeine, sugar, salt, fat, alcohol, drugs etc because we like the taste the way it makes us feel and because some people also use them as a coping mechanism like you can't wake up or function properly unless you have strong coffee in the morning or maybe you need a glass of wine or something to relax after a hard day"

Alison replied: "I don't take any stimulants at all and ive survived quite well :)"

Phantom_of_the_Charter_School replied: "I don't take these types of things..."

Is it dangerous to mix Ritalin and caffeine since they're both stimulants? I'm just wondering because I know that an overdose of either one can be dangerous mainly because it makes your heart beat too fast, so could you wind up overdosing on stimulants in general by taking both at once? If so, anyone have an idea of how much you'd have to take for it to start to be dangerous? Is it a bad idea to consume about 200 mg of caffine if I've taken 10 mg of Ritalin? I wish to point out that the Ritalin is prescribed by a doctor, and the risk of heart problems from Ritalin is very, very low. Also, Ritalin is if anything more dangerous for children than for adults.

bubblez replied: "okay i dont no. but if you are over 12 it is dangerous to use ritalin anymore because it begins to wnid you up and cause heart roblems that can lead to a heartattack. ritalin in itself is dangerous"

Kitten replied: "Yes! they are both dangerous to the heart and central nervous system. Too much of either one can cause severe depression and other health problems."

BrianL replied: "I don't think it's dangerous. I used to take Provigil (I called it "Legal Speed"), and I drank coffee. My heart rate did increase, but not to the point where it was dangerous. I asked my neuro about it, and he said no worry."

I dont get any affects from stimulants like caffeine..? Am I alone on this one? I can drink strong coffee and take red bull and it does nothing for me.

ccstangfan2 replied: "I would have to agree, and if I do it's small amounts of energy....I think we need us some horsepills, lol."

Kelly C replied: "I am the same way. Coffee, Red Bull. Even going to opposite way, "nighttime" medications don't help me sleep either. And when I had my kids, the drugs they gave me barely made a dent. I think some people are just naturally resistant to outside influences."

sharrona replied: "Some people just don't. It's nothing to be concerned about unless you want a stimulant, then you'll have to find something else that will work for your system."

Mary B replied: "You may be hyperactive, this is something of a test for that if you give a person that is hyper a cup of coffee and it does not seem to stimulate them they believe that it is because of that. Caffeine can sometime act in reverse for some people."

whycantigetagoodnickname replied: "Caffeine only has a good effect if you are sleep deprived really. If you are sleeping well then it wont have a great effect"

angelbaby replied: "Yes, I am like that too. My brother drinks coffee or has a cappucino and he's all hyper and stuff, but I drink soda a lot and I feel no stimulant affects from it. My mom is the same way as me, and one of my other brothers is like the one I described above. So I guess it's just something that affects different people differently, or not at all."

dora_the_explorer replied: "me too :-( its a shame really cos its cheaper than drugs!"

nicolaslucouck@btinternet.com replied: "i never really drink any of these drinks regularly but when i do i dont get the 'rush' that other people talk about"

Will someone every create an energy patch that releases caffeine and other stimulants into the skin? like a nicotine patch....

♥isabela♥ replied: "they all ready have, but DO NOT TRY IT!!!!!!!!!! it is VERY bad for you and can do lots of harm"

iheartcg3 replied: "I don't know but I could use one of those this morning."

Sunshine29 replied: "There are all kinds of patches for (already mentioned) nicotine, serotonin, birth control, tons of pain medications, and scientists are creating new ones every day due to patients' fear of needles, and they're easier to administer to the patient with stomach or intestinal issues."

What are the effects of a caffeine stimulant such as Vivarin on goldfish respiration ? I'm doing a science fair project on this topic and I'm having a hard time finding reliable resources with background information on golfish respirtation and caffeine. If any of you know of any reliable sources I could reffer to, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
